Nuvolau-2574m, before Nuvolau also Gusela-2595m, Averau-2649m, Gallina and Croda Negra-2518m

With PD Tržič I walked together with their club a nice, long path from the start at Passo di Giau, to which you drive from the famous winter ski center Cortina d'Ampezzo, where there are large extensive ski slopes with countless hotels, apartment houses and not least mountain huts in attractive places—on peaks, at the end of ski lifts. On the very top of Mount Nuvolau-2574 lives a beautiful hut R. Nuvolau. But no lift goes up there. Below at the starting point we split into two groups of hikers—easier and harder—with which I was and we made as many as five peaks. Our first goal for both groups was the Nuvolau hut, which is on the same-named peak. The easier group went up the easier path. We went the harder one—via ferrata De Ragusela. This is a sweet short ferrata that brings us to the first peak—Gusela-2595m. Then follows descent and ascent to Nuvolau peak, where there is the same-named hut. Before the peak there's still an attractive secured path. Lots of people at the hut. Our easier group hasn't arrived yet. They went the easier path somehow around these two peaks to the very Nuvolau peak to the hut. Then down to hut R. Averau—to there go ski lifts which operate also in summer. Then to the right to the mountain Averau-2649m—our highest goal. To it leads ferrata Averau and you must also descend it. The initial part is quite tough—demanding C, then you can avoid the second C via bypass. This is also a short sweet, not demanding ferrata. Unfortunately you have to descend it too, which is a bit harder for the inexperienced. Then follows half-hour ascent to the peak with cross and logbook. I didn't see Žiga. Then we went on descent and along a pleasant path at Averau hut to the left to the ridge of a slightly lower peak Gallina. It's about 2500m high—I don't know exactly. Descent from Gallina was very demanding. Then partly pathless, partly on unmarked trail to the end of some lift still to mountain Croda Negra-2518m and then followed a pleasant descent to our transport at Passo Falzarego-2117 m. Of course there was also some spiced part on the descent from the mountain. At least for the more demanding—my group it was actually almost all-day mountain trekking spiced also with two short sweet mini ferratas and as many as five two-thousanders, which is not a negligible achievement.

Last Saturday I luckily overnighted in Rifugio Nuvolau: their phone wasn't working that day, as I learned later, and so at 8:30 pm I cautiously asked if they had any bed free. Luckily a couple canceled and I had the whole room to myself! Otherwise my head hurt a bit at night and I slept poorly, possibly from altitude, hut at 2575 m. Sunday then at 8am from hut and after one hour already at neighboring, slightly higher Averau. Above the via ferrata there was still quite some snow, but it didn't cause serious problems. Interestingly, I met the first people only on return below the ferrata, a family with two kids, I'd say about 5 and 7 years old! Pictures: Nuvolau Averau

Passo Falzarego is an excellent starting point for diverse hiking goals, from easy to extremely demanding. We needed something relaxing, so we traced a circular variant over Averau and Nuvolau with finger on the map. In practice it turned out to be a great choice. A bit of history about this area too... Passo Falzarego was during WWI the front line between Austria-Hungary and Italy. Austrians occupied the highest points on peaks Piccolo Lagazuoi and Sasso di Stria and from there prevented the enemy from advancing to Tyrol. Italian army took positions in the area of rock formations Cinque Torri on the opposite side of the pass. They built kilometers of defensive trenches, living quarters, food and ammo storage, stables for animals, set up communication lines. Here was also the seat of Italian mountain artillery group, which among others used giant naval guns of 30 cm caliber. So your pants rip . Today there's an open-air museum there. For Italians the most important observation post was on Mt. Nuvolau, which allowed 360-degree view far around. From there they could effectively monitor the front events and adapt to the situation. All together didn't help them, they lost the whole war, Tyrol they got at the *green* table. Soldiers weren't the best, diplomats excellent . How we hiked... We started of course at Passo Falzarego and at first light. Thus we avoided tourist crowds that later roll around these mountains. No cold despite mid-September, shorts and t-shirt welcome. We chose path 441 towards Forcella Averau and in between turned also to friendly mountain Croda Negra (branch 442). Descent from it later joins the original path and soon we were at the saddle at Averau hut. We descended right towards Passo Giau (path 452) and from there via easy ferrata Gusela conquered Nuvolau peak with same-named hut in unique position. Still descent via normal route to saddle, then somewhat more demanding ferrata to Averau peak, then along the right side of the mountain back to start (path 440/442). Conclusion... All protections in excellent condition, paths exemplarily marked and nowhere too strenuous, views unique. All together it added up to 17 km and 1400 elevation gain. Where to start... At the highest parking at Passo Falzarego ... 46.519501, 12.008644

This year's vacation was gifted by I don't know who, because the weather served us for full 13 days and we gathered impressions for the whole long winter. The above tour is for the soul and relaxation, that day we still didn't know what awaited us the next day, when we trudged almost 3 hours, but in the second half of the tour the effort was richly rewarded. Continuation follows

And it happened. Despite other forecasts, we woke up with a view of snow-covered peaks. The front swung its tail overnight and shook snow also in our areas. Quickly we changed the daily goal and the most sensible variant was a visit to the easy peak Nuvolau near Passo Falzarego. Despite the late departure we were alone at the parking lot. Cold wind and temperatures below freezing also raised doubts in us about the sense of continuing. Luckily we chose path 440 for the ascent, which was somewhat sheltered. We came to the open world a good hour later, when the sun was already pleasantly caressing frozen faces. After a short consideration we decided to continue. Quickly we were at the Rif. Averau hut on the saddle between the same-named peak and our goal Nuvolau. Up to it via path 439, which slowly rises along the ridge all the way to the hut on top. In between there were also some ice traps, well covered with snow, waiting especially for me . A short stop on top for obligatory photos and quickly we descended in the direction of the approach. The original idea of continuing over the ridge was off due to conditions and we weren't sorry at all. Despite the sun it was still dog-cold and the leisurely descent was more than welcome. So it went all the way to the Rif. Scoiattoli hut, where we went to explore Cinque Torri. These are a story of their own. The towers were a strategic point during WWI occupied by the Italians. Today the whole area is turned into a military open-air museum. For the full tour you need an hour or two, best early when there aren't yet many tourists. They mass-visit Cinque Torri mainly because of the nearby lift. We didn't have that much time and saw only the central part. We continued around the main tower Torre Grande all the way to the lower-lying Rif. Cinque Torri hut. This gives the impression of a real hut and not a catering place like Rif. Scoiattoli at the lift. The interior is also in the same style and here we drank one of the best cappuccinos far around . One curiosity … the price is much lower than in our shopping centers. The descent from the hut to the start went via path 425, which at the beginning is an asphalted supply road. After some bends it branches into the forest and a pleasant trail brought us to the junction with the morning variant. This was followed by some short walk on known terrain and quickly we were at the parking. It was still empty. Snow and cold obviously did their thing . Start coordinates: 46.5198511N, 12.0279422E
