Traverse Via de la Vita - Vevnica - Strug - Ponce

Print
bagi24. 08. 2010 19:09:47
Night start. In complete darkness we park at the upper Belopeško Lake and with gear preparation shorten the sleep of the Krčani in the neighboring car. We switch on lights, look towards our goal, immerse ourselves in thoughts for a moment and set off on today's path.

Vevnica, Strug, Ponce…..years-long wishes of my friends, promising weather forecast and inner call lured me back into the embrace of these mountains. The decision was easy. They rewarded us with a wonderful day, a path like few others and satisfaction hard to describe jezik

And the path, what is it like? For mountaineers with a clear head and enough respect there will be no problems. Just beware of moisture, fog on the ridge and your own foolishness. If you heed all that, you will be rewarded more than you expect. For others, only fear remains velik nasmeh

Approach via ferrata Via de la Vita is classic. Entry chimney free climb on the right, chain just decoration. Don't rely too much on the chain over the potbellied wall. If climbers ahead, watch out for rocks. When over the break, go left and follow pegs over slabs. Lojtra is hidden behind them. Above it you soon see sign for Vevnica.

Vevnica, Strug, Ponce. To Vevnica is easy. Follow red dots and watch chain secured with auxiliary rope. Soon on top. Be proud, not everyone gets there.
Continuation harder. Descent to notch towards Strug secured. Some pegs pulled out, but it goes. From notch onwards only your experience protects you. Don't rely on remnants of old times. When you see how some chains are attached, you will know what I mean. Long path ahead. Pass many exposed spots with deep views, where a slip is a one-way ticket. Follow faded dots and lines. If they run out, you are off track. Go back until you see them. Path always avoids difficulties to Italian side.

Soon Strug. For most solitary mountain on this path take a moment.
Continue left just before Strug. Path does not let up, Ponce getting closer. Not there yet. Long walk before Zadnja Ponca, surprised again. Descend to Rdeča škrbina, torn gully with torn chains, grass and soil between rocks. Fatigue is working, no mistake here. Last ascent and finally Srednja Ponca, end of journey into unknown. Breathe easy here, biggest difficulties behind. Continue to Visoka Ponca with renewed ferrata for descent or descend to Zacchi hut, where cold beer and friendly staff await nasmeh Choice is yours.

Let's sample some pics from this journey. Rest on *Opisih gora*

Interested in time frame and route direction, the one you did or reverse. Recommended variant. Is own rope needed for belaying on certain sections.

Tour interests me.

Thanks and best regards Štef

@RS756 - Around 15 hours from car to car...hmm...day passed quickly zmeden. No matter, we didn't go up to watch the clock nasmeh.

From that you can easily deduct an hour and a half for snack on Strug, extinguishing fire at Zacchi, calls of nature and similar trifles. Taking photos took a solid hour. Walking pace adjusted to team of three. Rope belay used three times. If we think about it, the timetable mainly depends on you and your abilities. Count on around 12 hours, so start very early so night doesn't chase you jezen.
Described direction Vevnica - Ponce more sensible for one-day tour due to easier descent.
Or wink at Mangart and set off on journey from Ponce direction mežikanje.

A bit less than 10 hours. Yes, it's possible. Tested. With a fast pace, good weather, no fear of depths and only necessary stops. But it's not always like that. Things get stuck easily. The group needs safety, the weather doesn't cooperate, the path has hidden itself jezen. Štef. Take a time reserve and at the end say "Damn, I'm fast" if you're faster nasmeh. And one more tip. On the good path to Stara planina (Alpe Vecchia) you can set out even in pitch darkness even if you don't know the path. You gain a good hour. Further on it's a bit harder if it's your first time, but by then the night will already be departing. The earlier you reach the ridge, the better. Walk nicely and write something.

This path I did yesterday also with someone else, it went quite well, self-belaying kit (first time I had it on and used it, but I got used to it quickly), helmet, ...towards Ponca the cables were torn, descent via the renovated ferrata from Ponce...enjoyed to the max, just a bit scared of falling rocks.

Ferratas are from now on my tours.

Ljubitelj gora, congrats for completing the extremely demanding and dangerous path, tell us more about this path, especially the section from Vevnica to Ponce: were there any orientation problems, was rope belaying needed anywhere, how is it with friability, which section is the hardest?
and timing, how long did you need for Via della Vita, and how much further for the mentioned section?
thanks for info.

Last week we also did this traverse. The most demanding is the descent from Vevnica to the saddle under Strug, mainly due to crumbly terrain. But it is secured, so it goes (but still be careful, as the protections are in poor condition in places - pulled-out slings). Otherwise a wonderful tour in nice weather nasmeh.

Ljubitelj Gora, you write so much, why can't you answer the above simple questions? And maybe describe in more detail some demanding detail of the traverse from Vevnica to Ponce?
Pika (and any other experts) thanks, but I want to learn precisely from him.

Because they'll laugh at my comment again, but I'll contribute my part anyway.

The path from the Belopeški lakes through the forest is still quite well marked and signed; on the scree field, the traces get a bit lost because heavy rain usually washes away sand/rocks there, but Via della Vita is nicely visible when you come out of the forest properly; best to look far up beforehand where it runs, to the scree it's trodden or to the wall. You have to be careful under the wall, as some small rock rushes down; the start of the ascent requires overcoming a very small part with a little effort, then the path is still quite OK; of course, the obligatory self-belay set is necessary, the steel cables are partly renewed, that vertical climb is also OK with arm strength and caution, it goes on to the top, everything is OK. From Vevnica over Ponce, the path is quite exposed and dangerous, fallen pegs, torn slings, climbing on smooth rock on all fours, all that to the path that leads from Tamar to Ponce, then our marks and the path is well secured, still a jump to the "tazdanjo" ponca, and descent via the renewed ferrata and descent to the hut, this part from Ponce is also hard. The whole path is extremely demanding; at one of the poncas where you could descend to the valley, you can't because the protections are torn and a rope is needed (somewhere in the middle of the path).

Well, you see, it works... really good description... if all your comments were like this, there'd be no problems here.
But your companion - obvious expert who took a beginner on this unprotected crossing, he was really brave... no wonder he wants to stay anonymous.
Hope at least he's a mountain guide.

No, no, I don't want to expose him and he's not a mountain guide and under the initiative I put it on my own responsibility.

Prizjezen who claims that if you have a guide everything will be OK. A guide is obliged to know the conditions on the path and protect the client. No guide guarantees 100% safety on this path, since that's impossible. zavijanje z očmi

BT88 - don't get mad. Obviously an expert - because he knew the unmarked path. I doubt he went there the first time too. With a mountain guide it'd be basically safe, because as you correctly say, he'd protect the client. Otherwise I see that your communication style and knowledge of the issue are very similar to Ljubitelj gora, so suitable for such discussions.
