This path particularly stuck in my memory, so I went again everything from my message onwards, just forgot to add - my mistake. I could have taken ferrata gloves with me, so I got some scratches. Definitely want more, counting on new mates if old mates won't be up for something more serious.

hiked yesterday in fantastic weather. Ferrata to Vevnica nicely protected. The only thing that scared us was the rocks dislodged higher up by chamois. Otherwise in the upper part we missed the marks and climbed a bit on our own to the path to the bivouac, snacked there and returned to the path to Vevnica. From there on the path is poorly traceable in places and broken cables can easily mislead which way the path continues. Otherwise we did the crossing without any problems, it's very nice with great views but of course very demanding. LP a and j

When you're still in the lower part of Via della Vite (where you cross above the cliffs), the cables are quite pinched in places... apparently only I saw that...

Nowhere in the descriptions do I see if there's a spring at the Ponce crossing. Our route plan is: Tamar, Ponce, Vevnica (sleep at Tarviso bivouac) and next day over Kotovo sedlo to Jalovec and back to Tamar. If anyone has been around there recently, other info would be welcome. Thanks and regards

My logic tells me that on ridges, and especially at about 2200 m, there can't be various "springlets" of water . Regards!

There aren't any, as far as I know.

@meta50, years ago I solved the water problem successfully by getting to snow in the karst holes a bit below the bivouac. It was twice and it was in the first half of July. Then I melted the snow with the stove (plus soup and tea, of course). Otherwise I solve similar problems and still do occasionally with a heavier backpack that is, I carry/carry water with me. It just didn't work and still doesn't work any other way. Since I doubt there's any snow patch left, let alone snow, not even a snowflake in this heat, you'll probably need to take water with you or . . .

Hiked this route 14 days ago but first to Vevnica then along the ridge to Ponc and down the valley to the lakes. No snow anywhere and no stream either. Trip quite long. We hiked with my buddy for a good 10 hours. Had about 4.5 liters of various drinks and it worked out. Of course it depends a lot on the weather. Then it was just the right temperature and even a few drops fell but it didn't hinder the path at all. At the start from Vevnica towards Poncs the protections are OK, later you have to find your own way sometimes, because the various cables are of very different vintages and preserved accordingly. Markings are very faded in places. Nevertheless, it was my nicest trip which I'll gladly repeat in the future. All in all, it's really for very experienced hikers.

Thanks, Tomas, for the extra information, which is very welcome on such a demanding trip...

If anyone has been on this trail this year, please describe the conditions. Are there any changes compared to old descriptions? thanks

According to the description on the page and data in this thread, nothing significantly new this year (relived today). At the ferrata entrance, the final gully is no longer a problem, the snow tongue can be safely crossed lower without winter gear. Ferrata start is the same — either direct support by the cable or climb on the right. No serious damage to equipment or path was seen. On the descent from Vevnica, just before the double cable, there's a weird step block that looks like it will break off completely sometime, but still holds. Circling around it proved too tedious. Oh, in this short section all important cables are in good condition, so we can trust even the more rusted ones (in a few places you can't see how/if the other end is attached). The most tedious was the descent from Ponce, as it's locally more destroyed than the ridge path (nothing new).

I also found out yesterday that Vevnica is in super condition. Snow causes no problems, the path is completely dry. Only at the very entrance to the ferrata the cable is torn. Which means it's impossible to belay there at the start. Of course the same direct up the cable or on the right side... Descended to the Mangart side and also when crossing the ridge everything ok and clearly visible. Good luck

Probably they left it like that on purpose and just made that loop at the end. Otherwise, with the addition of the cable next to the chain at the end, they would surely have fixed that too.

Mang. lakes - Alpe Vecchia - Via della Vita - Vevnica - Strug - over Zad., Sr. and Vel. Ponca - Zacchi (conditions 31.8.2013) Well, those lonely peaks were visited by quite a few hikers today, who "ordered" this real - clear weather. Traversing the mentioned ridge is demanding, both fitness-wise and technically, but most of all orientation-wise; good visibility is essential for path tracking, as there are marks (faded red dots only sporadically), protections on the ridge (from Strug to Ponca), and also few useful ones. The Via della Vita ferrata is not exactly hard, especially its initial chimney, where a peg or step would come in handy, but sadly there is none (except the already described hanging cable). Above the ferrata, where you cross scree and gravel gully, it is better to stay more to the right upwards; climb the small chimney via solid steel ladder, soon after you are at the junction and signs for bivak Tarvisio (right) and Vevnica (left). Red dots are fairly followable further to the saddle and Vevnica, then sadly less and less. Descent from Vevnica to Vev. notch runs on renovated cables, but is demanding; extra caution is needed mainly due to friability and abundance of scree and rocks. On the remaining parts and exposed ridges to Strug you will miss more protections; many cables on the path are no longer usable, so some short climbing up to II. grade in between. From Strug onwards to Poncas the terrain is already technically less demanding and also orientationally easier; but when you climb also to Vel. Ponca, you will really rejoice at our red-white marks and solidly attached cables. Return to the valley to Zacchi hut also requires a sure step from the mountaineer, as the slope is initially dangerous for slipping due to scree and debris on the path, later due to slippery grass. Well, the Italians also replaced and renovated some cables on the lower part of the path, so the descent to Zacchi is more friendly. For the whole path, traverse and return to Mang. lakes we took a good 12 hours, considering only short breaks for snack and photos.

To the above description I can only add that we had trouble at the ferrata entrance due to damaged cable; with your help we made it. Then we nicely followed you, breathing down your helmet as your mate said, met at summits, chatted a bit and continued... at the end you even tempted us with High Ponca, only we returned via ferrata to the hut... thanks for the company

Congrats to you mukica and your group. I like the facebook comment...."at ferrata entrance you buy ticket for whole ferrata"....further you need only will, enough fitness and clear head for deep valley views... Good luck all.
