Traverse Via de la Vita - Vevnica - Strug - Ponce

Nicely renovated now is Vita, only towards the top are faded markings, which spice up finding passages. To Strug nothing new, there Italians are renovating also the path from Alpe Vecchia. Finish over Visoka Ponca and back to the lakes. Although I'd prefer the path remain unequipped, full praise to the contractors working on very demanding terrain.

You started when the others were still sleeping. Nice big bite of the ridge you treated yourself to - great.

Tomorrow 14.10 the Kugy route on Strug will be officially open again, on the 150th anniversary of the military unit Battaglione Alpini; they renovated the protections and now it has become a real "via ferrata"; access from path 513 in stara planina/Alpe Vecchia and then up the scree, caution on the route approach, falling rocks and hard snow (crampons); on the ridge everything as before, protections in poor condition "perhaps" they will replace and renew them in 2023.

Nice, especially it needs fixing in two sections. Short ferrata between Strug and Vevnica and maybe a few meters of cable at Zadnja Ponca towards Strug. Everywhere else on this beautiful ridge not needed. Good luck

redbull, exactly as you said; we already informed the military unit for (we hope) the follow-up.

Although the topic title doesn't exactly match this route, I'll describe Sunday's tour here. From the parking at the former ramp in Planica we started at 6:50 and after a good half hour passed the hut in Tamar. Seven minutes later we branched right, steeply up towards the Ponc ridge. I have to admit "that morning wasn't my day". Soon my thigh muscles started burning, so I barely dragged myself onward. To Middle Ponca we took a bit over three hours. That I was really slow I realized also because Leja and Neža chatted lively the whole way about what climbing trainees do in Poljane and at Matica. Must mention the weather. Temperature pleasant, not too cold not too hot, above all no precipitation. Only visibility very poor. Here and there fog cleared a bit so Ciprnik or Mojstrovke ridge appeared for a moment and fog covered them back. At the top of Middle Ponca it seemed the sun would shine any moment, but nothing came of it. A half-hour break and completely different terrain acted as a reviver on me. Finally I became fully competitive with all three girls and the "old" ultramarathoner Aleš. The ridge from Middle Ponca towards the Last Ponca is at the start very wide and comfortable, later narrows and descends to the notch between Middle Ponca and Last Ponca. Due to fog we didn't see it at all. Suddenly the fog lifted and we stood before a vertical wall with an arrow drawn right to the edge above the abyss. Aleš immediately said "I won't go there". But when I stepped on the exposed path (I had walked it years ago) and the youngest Blažka quietly followed me, he had no choice but to grit his teeth and follow us. In fact this is the most exposed part of the whole tour. On the narrow gravelly path one must step really carefully, as a slip would be fatal. But it's true, the whole section has cemented special pitons on which one could belay or install a rope fence. When we climbed out of that part, we ascended the ridge again. From Tamar to Middle Ponca and right to Visoka the path is marked with Knafelj marks, left towards Strug only with red lines and dots. Those are also well visible, so orientation is not difficult. About fifteen minutes before the summit we hit the Kugy path which is really equipped with extremely tight cables. I really wonder how they tension them so much. But like Bruno I'd prefer if they weren't there, as it would be very nice pathless terrain. Of course I understand those who want to experience an extremely nice ridge even if they don't dare pathless. Plenty of nice pathless ridges remain for us like Loška stena, Pelc ridge or the nicest, Pihavec ridge. In short, from Middle Ponca to Strug we took one and a half hours. If the day were two hours longer, we'd have gone to Vevnica too, but we turned back. Back to Middle Ponca in the same time as the ascent. But we almost halved the descent time to Tamar, one hour and three-quarters. That I paid with "muscle fever" for three whole days. With a bit of luck in a day or two I'll post some of Aleš's, Leja's and Neža's photos.

Thanks to everyone I completely agree with that MinM description. Tomco, you know I'd almost rather go on such a tour on Monday than go to work

I'm wondering what equipment is needed - belays from Tarvizo bivouac to Vevnica? Descent by the same route.

A few years ago there was still a snow patch before the via ferrata entrance in August, I assume now it's all clear. At this time it doesn't get many visits and it'll be hard to find out the current state.

It all depends on experience, some would belay with a rope. By the way, you don't say how you imagine getting to the bivouac. If via Via della vita, you know... don't expect any belays or via ferrata there.

I meant from Loška Koritnica : to the bivouac. Up to there I know it. For further on, I'm more interested in not dragging protection with me. Not Martina yet now. When it'll be dry. It'll be soon.
