Access to starting point:
A) First, we drive to Kamnik, and then we continue driving in the direction of the Črnivec pass. Only a few hundred meters before the mentioned pass we notice signs for Kranjski Rak, which direct us sharply left onto a narrow and at first also quite steep road. The road flattens higher up and then brings us to the Volovljek pass, where near the inn Kranjski Rak we also park (parking in front of the inn is permitted only for guests).
B) From Gornji Grad we drive towards Kamnik, then only a few hundred meters after the Črnivec pass we continue right in the direction of Kranjski Rak. Further, we follow the above description.
C) From Savinjska dolina we first drive to Luč, and then we continue driving towards Kamnik. When we arrive at the Volovljek pass we park at a suitable place near the inn Kranjski Rak (parking in front of the inn is permitted only for guests).
Route description:
From Kranjski Rak we continue on a macadam road in the direction of Velika planina. The road at first slightly descends, and then passes into the forest, where it starts moderately ascending. After approximately half an hour of walking, we come to a somewhat larger crossroads, where we continue right in the direction of Konjščica and planina Dol (straight or slightly left planina Kisovec). The road then brings us to a large parking lot (possible starting point), and we continue on the forest road which is closed to public traffic. From the parking lot, we follow the mentioned road for approximately 10 minutes, and then the blazes direct us left onto a grassy slope, over which a relatively steep path leads. Soon the path levels out for a short time, and on the right side bypasses a lonely shepherd hut. Behind the hut the path passes into the forest and starts steeply ascending. Higher, we join a wider and less steep path from planina Marjanine njive. We follow the mentioned path to the left, and it quickly brings us out of the forest onto the grazing areas of Mala planina. Here the path completely levels out and after a few minutes of further walking brings us to a marked but in fog poorly visible junction. We continue slightly right in the direction of Jarški dom, to which only a 5-minute ascent over an increasingly panoramic slope remains.
We bypass the mentioned hut on the left side, and then continue the ascent on a wide path that gently ascends through a sparse forest. Already after a few minutes, the path to Črnuški dom branches off to the left, and we continue straight and follow the wide path all the way to Domžalski dom na Mali planini.

Discussion about the trip Kranjski Rak - Domžalski dom na Mali planini (below on road)

Was up on Saturday. The path is somewhat steep from the start (went through Marjan's fields) first 20 min then it goes easier-moderate. I also walked around Velika Planina all around and the highest peak on Velika Planina (1666) offers a wonderful view over the rest of the mountains around Velika Planina. For "non-hikers" I suggest checking if the cable car and chairlift are operating (http://www.velikaplanina.si/), as on Saturday they weren't because lightning struck the chairlift. So no one is surprised ... Lp

Yesterday my girlfriend and I were on Velika planina from Kranjski Rak. The shortcut through the forest is quite steep and slippery. Both of us fell on the way down on the muddy path. The offer on Velika is very poor. At Jarški there was no place to sit, at Domžalski they only had sausages, roasts, barley stew and buckwheat mush. After about 20 minutes, when there was no beer, let alone food, we continued the path towards Zeleni rob. In the guesthouse, despite not being too crowded, it was impossible to get anything to eat or drink. We decided to go down to the valley with an empty stomach and thirsty. At Kranjski Rak there was no food.

Dear fpetel1, you can nicely avoid the shortcut and make a nice big loop around Velika planina. If you don't like crowds, then go to Velika planina only on weekdays. As for the offer, it's completely O.K. You surely didn't expect grilled squid or something even more fancy in the mountains. In the mountains, buckwheat mush, sour milk, cabbage, something spoonable, and even a sausage fits. When we go to the mountains, it's very wise to realize that at least for a while we say goodbye to civilization and satisfy ourselves with what we can get in the mountains. Proven: even a sandwich from the backpack is very good in the mountains, especially if you're hungry. Good luck and safe travels!

This year we were as many as six times on Velika planina, on Sundays with family, in winter I go up alone, morning walk before lunch, at Jarški there are really always a lot of hikers, you know where the good food is, we go up for štruklji, in the mountains we always take time, to wait and also if we are not served immediately, you have to know that there is no hotel in the mountains, dear fpetel1, on Mali planini Csarjeva Ivanka has good cheese, so fpetel1 just go again with your girlfriend to Velika planina, you'll see differently and won't regret going up once more. And I wish you a safe journey.

I kindly ask the author of the "Access to starting point" description to include at least some locality that can be found on roadside signs. It would greatly facilitate and shorten the "access to starting point". Thanks.

I'm not the author, but if it helps you - on the signposts located below the Črnivec pass (if coming from the Kamnik side) the listed places are: Podvolovjek, Kranjski rak (also mentioned by the author), Kališe and Velika planina. Next to them is also a sign for guesthouse Črnivec, 750 m. At these signposts there is a small parking lot with a bench, the road to Kranjski Rak is opposite it (so left if coming from Kamnik or right if coming from GG or Črnivec pass. For Luče I can't quite remember if the signpost says Kranjski Rak or Kamnik. I hope the above helps.
