Laubau - Sonntagshorn

Access to starting point:
On the highway we go through Austria and ahead through Germany in the direction towards München. At Siegsdorf we leave the highway and we continue south towards Ruhpolding. Approximately 3 km ahead we reach the village Laubau, where the signpost points us left on a large parking lot in front of Holznecktmuseum Ruhpolding.

Path description:
From the parking lot signposts point us towards the south. At first an asphalt road after 800 meters changes into a macadam and we go there to 3 km distant mountain pasture Schwarzachen Alm (755 meters). Macadam road continues straight, and we turn right on a footpath which is winding along the stream. After few minutes, we come to a crossing. Both paths lead to the summit Sonntagshorn. The left is usually used for a descent, while the right for an ascent. And on this we also continue. We cross the stream, at first still quite gently, and then we starts very steeply ascending on the edge of an quite exposed gorge of the stream Mittleren Kraxenbach, which is adorn by numerous pools and waterfalls. At some spots we also get help from steel cables. The footpath is more or less winding parallel with the stream, several times we also cross it. After 2 hours of walking, we bypass a former, with larches overgrown mountain pasture Mittleren Kraxenbach Alm, and soon after this we step out of the forest. Above us there is rising steep scree, which is surrounded by northern wall of Sonntagshorn and its neighbors. Strenuous ascending on the scree brings us to the foot of the 70-meters chimney, which we have to climb (II. grade of climbing). Red dots lead us through jumps (I), follows exposed traverse to the left to the next band (II), over which we continue through groove (II) to the ridge. From here we go towards the summit more or less all the time straight on the ridge, further over few rocky jumps (I.-II. grade), higher through dwarf pines, until we step on a grassy top with a cross.
