For the finishing touch, the renovated Aljaž Tower equipped with Triglav Panorama.

With the installation of the final detail, the process of the comprehensive renovation of the Aljaž Tower on Triglav has been completed. Inside, they have installed the Triglav Panorama, a painted view from the summit, which Jakob Aljaž once described as the most important piece of equipment for the tower.

Aljaž believed that the Triglav Panorama would enable visitors to the highest-lying monument in Slovenia to "sufficiently orient themselves" and that they would have "sitting in the tower, the entire expansive panorama painted in front of them and could compare it with the view in nature".
On Aljaž's order, the original panorama was painted with oil paints on a sheet metal carrier by Franjo Jeglič, a teacher from Dovje. He used reduced images of the Panorama from Triglav by the landscape painter Marko Pernhart for this.

With the help of painting and photography
The Triglav Panorama was carried to the top of Triglav on Thursday by four restorers from the Restoration Centre of ZVKDS and the National Museum of Slovenia and reinstalled in the Aljaž Tower. The panorama was painted by academic painter Maja Šubic, and academic painter Irena Romih assisted her with the execution of the inscriptions.

The painter executed the panorama in the same technique as the original. For painting, she also used Pernhart's panorama, which she appropriately updated and functionally adapted using panoramic photographs by Damjan and Jernej Kokelj.

This tin has soul
The installation of the Triglav Panorama in the Aljaž Tower was thus the final act of the comprehensive renovation of the tower, which began in September 2018. In the ambitious conservation-restoration intervention, the tower was safely transported to the valley, then its structural and other elements were thoroughly restored, and finally returned to the top of Triglav in just over a month.

The travelling exhibition and the film of the same name "This tin has soul" greatly contributed to the smooth progress of the renovation, as they significantly raised public awareness of the importance and uniqueness of the tower, according to ZVKDS.

The painted panorama already helped hikers with orientation and observing the surroundings through the upper window openings upon its installation 130 years ago. When Aljaž erected the tower, it also contained three chairs, blankets, two pots and two samovars with which one could make tea, and six glasses for drinking. Instead of water, melted snow from the surroundings served. The barometer was placed inside, and the thermometer outside. The interior had space for four to six people.

The panorama was thus installed in the year marking 130 years since the erection of the Aljaž Tower and 180 years since the birth of Jakob Aljaž. As noted by the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage, the tower has gained a key integral element that enriches the content dimension of the national symbol. "With our efforts to preserve it, we professionals, conservators and conservator-restorers also wish to contribute so that the values it embodies – patriotism, courage, determination, faith, optimism, cultural commitment, ingenuity, perseverance, self-sacrifice, heartfeltness, humility, team spirit, etc. – continue to reside in the land under Triglav. May the tower not be a stumbling block and division, but a builder of unity in goodness," they concluded.
