A larger forest fire has broken out in the area of Bistriški vintgar, hiking trails are closed!

In the vicinity of Slovenska Bistrica, near Rimski kamnolom, an extensive forest fire has broken out in a hard-to-reach area. Authorities urge any hikers to avoid the area.

According to the Maribor police administration, the fire in the hard-to-reach area broke out near Jurišna vas or Ančnikov gradišče at Rimski kamnolom. According to data on the website of the Administration for Civil Protection and Disaster Relief, firefighters were notified of the fire around half past four in the morning.

The fire is being fought by members of the voluntary fire brigades Tinje and Zgornja Bistrica; an air tractor firefighting plane and a helicopter have also been activated, Dejan Kosi, head of the Maribor notification center, told STA, as firefighters are having difficulty accessing the fire source.

According to Kosi, three local fire brigades are currently on site, and additional units will be included if necessary. There is no data on the formation of an intervention headquarters for now, he added.

Stones are crumbling at the fire site, police warn in the meantime. Since it is the area of Bistriški vintgar, which is often full of hikers, the police urge people to avoid the location. Hiking trails are closed, they add.

As TV Slovenija reported, according to initial data the fire does not threaten houses or residents.
