Čatež ob Savi - Sveti Vid (Šentviška gora) (Leseni križev pot)

Access to starting point:
a) Exit the Dolenjska motorway at the Čatež ob Savi exit, then at the roundabout select the exit for Čatež ob Savi and Brežice. Continue along the road that runs parallel to the motorway. When the main road turns right into the underpass, we turn left towards the centre of Čatež ob Savi (direction Cerklje ob Krki). Drive through the settlement, just before Gostilna Pension Les turn sharply right onto Rimska cesta. After a short ascent, arrive at the church of St. George, where a few parking spaces are available. You can park here or continue approximately 100 metres to a larger car park at the end of the road, located near the former Motel Čatež.
b) Drive to Brežice and follow the signs for Čatež ob Savi. Immediately after the underpass under the motorway, turn into the centre of the settlement. Before Gostilna Pension Les, turn sharply right onto Rimska cesta. Drive along it to the church of St. George, where parking spaces are provided, or continue another 100 metres to the car park at the former Motel Čatež, where the road ends.

Route description:
Under the parish church in Čatež ob Savi is the 1st station of the Way of the Cross. From the church, continue along the pavement towards the former Motel Čatež, where there is a suitable parking area for hikers at the end of the road (there are no designated parking spaces in the village centre). At the parking area, turn left onto the footpath, which first takes us past the 2nd station of the Way of the Cross, then along the edge of the meadow to the junction with the marked trail starting in the centre of Čatež.
Here, go right, then just before the marked trail enters the forest, at the 3rd station of the Way of the Cross, the path splits. Continue left (straight ahead the regular marked trail continues) along the well-maintained but subsequently unmarked path, along which the stations of the Way of the Cross are arranged.
Higher up, the path rejoins the marked trail and soon leads us to a signposted junction a few minutes below the church of St. Vid. Take the left path (right leads to Veliki Cirnik) and follow the stations of the Way of the Cross. In a few minutes, we reach the last, 14th station, located by the church of St. Vid, from where a beautiful view opens towards the valley and the surrounding hills.

Interesting facts about the wooden Way of the Cross:
The wooden Way of the Cross in Čatež ob Savi was solemnly opened and blessed in April 2023. All 14 stations are the unique work of the local artist and sculptor Vlado Cencl, who shaped the sculptures entirely with a chainsaw. Solid oak wood was chosen as the material, symbolizing strength and ensuring the durability of the artworks in the natural environment.
The path revives the old local name "through Hruševje". It is a historical path that locals used for decades as a school and church shortcut between the hilly villages and the valley. Each station, besides the artistic depiction, also bears an inscription with a thought or prayer, offering hikers space for a short stop and reflection. The entire project was initiated by locals and local associations, thereby enriching the tourist and sacral offerings of the area.
