The protected area extends over about 18,000 ha, the second largest in the entire region. From an orographic point of view, the two main ridges stand out, culminating respectively in Monte Pellecchia (1368 m) and Monte Gennaro (1271 m), flanked by the smaller massifs of Serrapopolo (1188 m) and Cima Cesarene (1191 m). Covered by vast forest extensions (beech woods, oak woods, mixed vegetation tracts, etc.), these green reliefs nevertheless leave space for plateaus and pastures (the very popular “Pratone” of Gennaro), where the karst nature of the terrain is evident. The Monti Lucretili Regional Park is just a few dozen kilometers from Rome but is already completely “other” from its rhythms. While the villages on the southernmost slope of the massif, namely Marcellina, Palombara and Moricone itself, feel the proximity to Rome, the more internal ones preserve landscapes and atmospheres of other times:
