Description: #fidenetrekking #abruzzotrekking1962 The Maiella massif is the most imposing and prominent of the entire Apennines, with over 60 peaks exceeding 2000 meters. Monte Amaro (2,793 m) is its highest summit, the second mountain of Abruzzo and the entire Apennines after the Gran Sasso massif. This stunning peak is reachable however after long, exhausting paths with significant elevation gains, suitable for expert hikers. The most fascinating and classic itinerary starts from Passo Lanciano. From here reach the Blockhaus parking (1,980 m) and follow the well-visible trail (CAI no. 1) crossing the Sella Acquaviva meadows passing just below Monte Cavallo (2,171 m) reaching the ridge beyond which is Bivacco Fusco (2,500 m). From here easily reach the Monte Focalone plain (2,676 m) opening the view to Monte Amaro and the long tiring steps of the Tre Portoni leading to its summit. Descend to the saddle of the First Portone then climb Cima Pompilio (2,656 m); descend the Second Portone climbing around Monte Rotondo and finally tackle the Third Portone (2,550 m) leading directly to a plateau at 2,646 m. From here along a wide ridge reach the summit of Monte Amaro. This itinerary characterized by harsh lunar landscapes becomes absolutely unmissable in spring during flowering. Other equally interesting and challenging trails allow reaching the summit. Necessary to equip with a good trail map and consult CAI sections for advice and guides. Monte Amaro (2,792 m a.s.l.) is the highest peak of the Maiella massif, on the western slope overlooking the Peligna Basin to the west.
