Description:
The Sachsenburg fortification was once an important valley barrier for the Salzburgers. At the beginning of the 13th century, two castles were built on the fortress hill. In the disputes with the Carinthian dukes and the Counts of Görz, Sachsenburg played an important role for Tyrol. Sachsenburg originally belonged to the Lurner counts. Through a donation by Bishop Altmann of Trent, it came to the Archdiocese of Salzburg in 1149. A 'Hainricus tunc vicarius in Saxenburch' is documentarily mentioned in 1213. In 1252, Sachsenburg was unsuccessfully besieged by Counts Albert III of Tyrol and Meinhard III of Görz.
