#fidenetrekking #abruzzotrekking1962 #montesoratte #bunker #eremi #meri #santoreste #kesserling #roma Established by L.R. October 6, 1997, no. 29 (B.U.R. November 10, 1997, no. 31 S.O. no. 2), the Reserve is a unique green lung between the Via Flaminia and the Tiber River, just a few dozen kilometers north of Rome. It includes the isolated relief of Monte Soratte, a modest but towering limestone massif that stands out in the gentle landscape of the Tiber valley. Less than 700 meters high, more a hill than a mountain, yet from its summit the view embraces a vast panorama. The Reserve's territory extends over 444 hectares on the surface of the mountain from which it takes its name, rising in the flat landscape of the Tiber valley, between the Via Flaminia and the river about 40 km north of Rome. Although the highest peak reaches only 691 meters, from the mountain's summit one can admire a unique panorama ranging from Monte Terminillo to Monte Amiata, to Lago di Bracciano and beyond to the Tyrrhenian Sea. The limestone composition of the rocks gives rise to karst phenomena both on the surface and in depth. Some of the cavities produced, like the Grotta di S. Lucia, confer inestimable value to the Reserve. The vegetation of Monte Soratte also differs markedly from the surrounding landscape, similar to its geological features, forming a distinctly recognizable entity. To the naturalistic interest, the Reserve adds historical-monumental value due to the presence of a path of hermitages testifying to the site's religious vocation, known since ancient times as the “Sacred Mountain”. The Monte Soratte Nature Reserve includes the entire carbonatic relief of Monte Soratte up to Monte Piccolo to the South-East (excluding the inhabited center of Sant’Oreste), rising with very steep walls from the flat area to the right of the Tiber. The relief has an elliptical shape 5.5 km long, oriented NW-SE, with the highest peak at 691 meters.
