The archaeological park trails will lead you to discover the cave settlement consisting of caves, Etruscan dovecotes, and remains of a medieval village. The area where Vitozza stands was inhabited since protohistory; circular holes that hosted the poles of the earliest dwellings are still recognizable. Ancient canalization works and rock cisterns are also visible. You can enter and visit almost all the caves, with niches, ovens, lamp holders, holes to support beds. Some caves are very large, with multiple rooms and even two levels connected internally by a still passable staircase. Very interesting is a dovecote cave with typical ogival niches; for many years they were thought to be Roman-era funeral cells, but today the most accredited theory identifies these particular caves as pigeon breeding facilities.
