Access to starting point:
A) First, we drive to Kranjska Gora, and then we continue driving towards Vršič. Already soon after Kranjska Gora ends, we cross the Pišnica river, and just a few tens of meters further we turn right onto a larger parking lot, where we park by Lake Jasna.
B) We drive to Trenta, and then through the Vršič pass we drive towards Kranjska Gora. When we arrive at Lake Jasna, we park on a large macadam parking lot by the lake (the parking lot is located on the left side of the main road).
Path description:
From the parking lot we walk a few steps along the road in the direction of Kranjska Gora, then behind a smaller dam we continue left along the gravel bed of the Pišnica. The path ahead leads us along a concrete embankment, then we enter the forest through which we begin to ascend. At the beginning the path leads past several junctions, and we follow the signs for Vitranc or Ciprnik. A little higher we arrive at a junction where the path straight ahead to Mala Pišnica used to continue (the path is damaged, impassable, dangerous and therefore closed), and we continue right and begin to ascend more steeply in zigzags. For some time we ascend relatively steeply, then the path turns right and crosses the slopes of Vratnik (Vratnik is part of the eastern ridge of Vitranc). Further on we ascend again in a few zigzags, then we arrive at a junction where we continue left steeply upwards (if we continue straight we arrive at the Kranjska Gora ski slopes, it is also possible to ascend to Vitranc from there). A very steep ascent follows, then we reach the main ridge of Vitranc, where the path turns right and continues on or slightly beside the ridge. The path ahead is most of the time still quite steep, but higher the steepness eases. A little further the path moves away from the ridge to the left and flattens, so we reach Mojčin dom in a gentle to moderate ascent.
From Mojčin dom, near which there is also the decaying Dom na Vitrancu, we continue straight to a junction a few tens of steps away, where the path from Kranjska Gora also joins from the right.
Again we go straight in the direction of Ciprnik, where the path also leads past the decaying one-seater chairlift Vitranc II.
(The one-seater chairlift Vitranc II is the oldest one-seater chairlift in Slovenia and one of the oldest in the world as it bears the year 1958. A few years ago it was still possible to ride it safely to Vitranc, today it no longer has an operating permit).
The path continues along the ridge of Vitranc with some shorter ascents and descents, then we arrive at the place where the path from Planica also joins from the right.
We continue straight along a path that gradually becomes steeper, which higher takes us out of the forest into the belt of dwarf pines. The steep path, alongside which there are some safety protections further on that are not necessarily needed, then accompanies us all the way to the scenic Ciprnik.
From Ciprnik a beautiful view opens towards the mountains above the valleys of both Pišnicas and of course an exceptional view of the nearby Jalovec and the other mountains above Tamar, and we continue towards Visoka peč, the summit that we see on our side of Tamar if we look in the direction of the Ponc ridge.
On the summit we look for a path among the dwarf pines that, with the help of numerous cairns, leads us along the western side of Ciprnik first moderately, then steeply downwards. The path quickly flattens, then ascends to a panoramic knoll between Ciprnik and Visoka peč. From the knoll, from which we have a good view of our goal for today, a descent follows again, then the path, which mostly runs through cut dwarf pines, brings us to the last saddle below the summit. Some moderate ascent follows, then the path stands nearly vertical and ascends very steeply for a few minutes. Higher the path flattens somewhat, then quickly brings us to the scenic and relatively rarely visited summit.
Jasna - Mojčin dom na Vitrancu 2:15, Mojčin dom na Vitrancu - Ciprnik 45 minutes, Ciprnik - Visoka peč 30 minutes.
