Matizovec - Mala Košuta

Access to starting point:
From highway Ljubljana - Jesenice we go to the exit Ljubelj and follow the road ahead towards the border crossing. Main road we leave at the spot, where signs for »camp and Podljubelj« point us to the right. When we leave the main road, we will already after few meters come on crossroad, where we continue left in the direction of »Kofce«. Further, we drive through the village on a slightly ascending road and then we turn right in the direction of »Matizovec and Kofce«. This occasionally a little more narrow road which is in the lower part asphalt, we then follow to a larger marked parking lot, about 150 altitude meters below the farm Matizovec.

Path description:
From large free parking lot we continue on a macadam road, on which in approximately 20 minutes we get to the farm Matizovec.
From Matizovec we continue on a rough road in the direction of Dom na Kofcah, and on some successive crossings, we carefully follow the blazes. After few minutes of walking on a rough road or cart track, blazes point us on a steep footpath which at first ascends diagonally towards the left and then passes on a forested ridge, where it turns a little to the right. Further, we are ascending on a steep mountain path, which higher crosses a cart track and behind it gradually flattens. Only a little further, forest gets thinner, and marked path turns right in the forest and a little higher joins the cart track which is ascending diagonally towards the right. Cart track higher turns to the left, and from the right joins also the marked path from Kal.
From the crossing ahead forest ends, and more and more scenic path in 5 minutes of additional walking brings us to the mountain hut Dom na Kofcah.
From Dom na Kofcah we continue right in the direction of the mountain pasture Šija. The path at first in a gentle descent crosses slopes towards the east, and then joins a wide cart tracks, which brings us out of the forest on the mountain pasture Ilovica. The path further starts slightly ascending and after few additional minutes of easy walking it brings us to the cottage on the mountain pasture Šija.
From the cottage on the mountain pasture Šija we continue on the macadam road, and already after few meters it brings us to a marked crossing, where slightly to the left an unmarked path branches off, which leads on Kladivo and old border guard path, which crosses the southern slopes of Košuta. We continue on the road which a little ahead turns a little to the right, and then it brings us on a side ridge, where it turns to the left (here for some time a nice view opens up towards the south). From a longer left turn ahead the road starts descending steeper, and we continue there to the beginning of the mountain pasture Pungrat. Here we leave the road and on a gently sloping mogul meadow in few minutes we walk to the shepherd hut on the mountain pasture Pungrat.
From the shepherd hut, we continue on a marked path in the direction of Dolga njiva (left Škrbina and Veliko Kladivo) and we at first continue on a gentle cart track which a little higher ends. We continue on a poorly visible footpath which at first still continues over mogul meadows. Higher from the left almost unnoticeably joins also an already mentioned border guard path, and we continue straight to the near grazing fence. Mentioned fence we cross and we step from the mountain pasture Pungrat on pastures of Tegoška planina. Further on the upper side we cross a grazing area of the upper part of Tegoška planina, and then the path turns a little to the right and past a trough with water leads into a dense forest. Next follows a short crossing through the forest and then we ascend on a panoramic ridge of Kisovec. From here we descend for few steps to a small saddle, where we cross a grazing fence. The path ahead takes us on a cart track, on which we diagonally descend through a large clearing. On the other side of the clearing the path returns into the forest, through which it starts descending. After a short descent from the right joins also unmarked path (path marked with an arrows) from the shepherd hut on Tegoška planina, and we continue left and we still cross slopes of Košuta towards the east to northeast. Next follows traversing of occasionally even steeper and partly also grassy slopes, and the path from which occasionally a view opens up on surrounding peaks, we follow to a marked crossing, where the marked path on Košutnikov turn branches off to the left. At the mentioned crossing, we continue straight on the bottom right path, on which in few minutes we descend to the near forest road. When we step on the road, we follow it to the left, and there in few steps we get to mountain dairy on the mountain pasture Spodnja Dolga njiva.
Further, we continue on the mountain pasture upwards in the middle of which runs a wide cart track which after good 15 minutes of walking, it brings us out of the forest on the mountain pasture Zgornja Dolga njiva.
The steepness of the path which was until now moderate decreases and the path on a nice grassy terrain soon brings us on the main part of the mountain pasture, where the blazes end. We continue on a slightly ascending path which runs by a smaller, but very distinct torrent ditch. A little further unmarked path splits into two parts.
We continue slightly right (left Tolsta Košuta) on the path which a little further ascends on the border ridge. Ridge a little further turns left, and the path at first descends from the secondary peak, and then on and by the ridge in few minutes of panoramic walking it brings us to the summit of Mala Košuta.
