Access to starting point:
A) Access from Gorenjska: From Rateče or Predel we cross the border to Trbiž / Tarvisio and then on the highway in the direction of Videm / Udine to exit Tolmezzo. From Tolmezzo we follow the road in the direction of village Ampezzo and mountain pass Passo Mauria. The road then descends and it brings us to a crossroad, where we continue left (possible also right) in the direction of Cortina d'Ampezzo. At all next crossroads, we follow the signs for Cortina d'Ampezzo.
In Cortina d'Ampezzo then we follow the signs for Alpine mountain pass Passo di Falzarego. This ascending road we then follow to a crossroad at an altitude of approximately 1400m. At the crossroad, we continue left in the direction of Alpine mountain pass Passo di Giau and Marmolada. We park on a large parking lot on the mountain pass Passo di Giau.
B) From Primorska: We drive on the highway towards Venice / Venezia. At town Portogruaro we leave the highway towards Venice and continue right on the highway towards Pordenone. At the next highway junction near Conegliano, we continue right towards Belluno. Near Belluno the highway ends and at the next crossroads we continue in the direction of Cortina d'Ampezzo. Further, we follow the description above.
Path description:
From the mountain pass, we continue left (towards the south) on the path which on the left side bypasses the chapel. The path with mark 436 at first leads us on gently sloping meadows with beautiful views on surrounding peaks, and then it brings us on a smaller notch named Forcella Zonia. From the notch, we descend a little and then we cross steep slopes above the valley Valle di Zonia. After the crossing, the path brings us to the notch Forcella Col Piombin where there is another crossing.
A little less beaten path Sentiero Alpinistico del Cernera, which leads towards the peaks Monte Cernera and Monte Verdal branches off to the right. From the notch, we continue left on a well-beaten path 436. The path from the notch starts descending and at first crosses little steeper slopes. Slopes then become less steep and the path turns to the left towards the east and continues slightly descending. The path further again starts ascending and it brings us to a crossing below the steep mountain walls of the peak Monte Formin.
At the crossing where from the left path from a little lower starting point joins, we continue right towards the notch Forcella Giau. The path here starts ascending even a little steeper, and from the path increasingly beautiful views are starting to open up on the mountain groups Tofana and Sella. Such a path then brings us to the already mentioned notch where a view towards the south opens up, where Monte Pelmo stands out.
On the notch where there is a crossing a well-beaten path 436 towards the saddle Forcella Ambrizola branches off to the left, and we go right on a poorly visible path 465. Poorly visible path here starts descending on grassy slopes and it brings us to a crossing.
The marked path here turns to the right towards the valley Val Cernera, and we go slightly left on unmarked archaeological path which leads past large boulders towards a small lake Lago delle Basti, which can be seen from the path for quite some time. The path continues to descend all the way to the mentioned lake.
On the other side of the lake where the path towards the mountain pasture Malga Mondeval di sopra and archaeological finds from the Mesolithic turns to the left, we go to the right on even less visible path by the ridge. Further, we are ascending by the ridge towards the summit Corvo Alto. The path runs on left eastern side of the ridge, where slopes are grassy and not that steep, right western side of the ridge is precipitous. We still continue on the path with beautiful views by the ridge all the way to the top.
On the way: Forcella Zonia (2229m), Forcella Col Piombin (2239m), Forcella Giau (2360m), Lago delle Baste (2281m)
