Access to starting point:
From Ljubljana through Karawanks tunnel to Spittal. Next we drive towards Lienz, where at the roundabout, we continue in the direction of village Sillian in Italy. On the italian side of the border, we quickly come to San Candido, where we continue left in the direction of tourist town Sesto / Sexten. Only a little after town Sesto we come in San Giuseppe / Moss, where signs for Val Fiscalina / Fischleintal point us to the right. Further, we drive on an ascending road which we follow to a large payable parking lot.
Free parking lot is approximately 2 km lower, by the bottom station of the cable car "Alta Pusteria".
Path description:
From the parking lot, we continue few ten meters on the main road and a little before hotel Dolomitenhof we go right on a narrow road which is closed for traffic. At first still paved with asphalt road soon becomes a macadam. From the road, we then go left on a wide footpath which leads further through a scenic valley. On a gentle path, we then soon reach the mountain hut Talschlusshütte / Rifugio Fondo Valle.
At the mountain hut, we continue right following the signs »Rif. Tre Cime« and »Rif. Comici«. After few minutes of walking on a wide footpath we come again to a marked crossing. At the crossing where there is a magnificent view on the northern wall of the peak Einserkofel / Cima Una (2698m) we continue right on the path 102 where signs point us to the mountain hut Rifugio Locatelli / Drei Zinnen Hütte, left leads the path towards the mountain hut Rifugio Comici / Zsigmondy Hütte.
Further, the path starts ascending a little steeper on the right side of the valley Alteinsteinertal / Valle Sasso Vecchio and mostly runs by dwarf pines. The path then few times gets closer to the stream and also a view starts to open up towards Monte Paterno. When we get closer to a waterfall of the stream Altensteiner Bach, the path turns a little right and starts ascending below the slopes of peaks Punta Slawina Lunga / Langlahn spitze (2770m) and Sasso Vecchio / Altsteinspitze (2909m). The path brings us out of the dwarf pines and is ascending towards the northwest. Later when the path brings us on less steep grassy slopes, the path turns to the left and past lakes Laghi dei Piani brings us to the hut Locatelli.
From the mountain hut, we continue slightly left and we start ascending on the northern ridge of Monte Paterno. We soon enter into tunnel from the first world war. At the ascent through the tunnel we will urgently need a lamp, because tunnel is long more than 500 meters. Occasionally through the windows in the tunnel also wonderful views open up towards Tre Cime / Drei Zinnen and the lake Laghi dei Piani. From the tunnel we will then come on the east slopes of the mountain and we will soon enter into climbing part of the path. The path at first steeply ascends right upwards and then turns to the left and on a well-secured path ascending towards the notch Forcella del Camoscio. On the notch, where our path joins with other two, we go right. With the help of steel cables we ascend over almost vertical wall. This part of the path is otherwise short, but demanding and that is why it is highly recommended use of self belaying. After that, the path becomes less demanding and through nice passages on the upper slope of the mountain we soon reach a very panoramic peak.
