Access to starting point:
Over the border crossing in Rateče we drive through Trbiž / Tarvisio. If we drive on the highway, we leave it at the exit for Tablja / Pontebba. We continue driving on the old road in the direction of Videm / Udine. In the settlement Na Bili / Resiutta we turn left towards the valley of Rezija (Val Resia). Further, we drive on a narrower asphalt road and follow the signs for the settlement Solbica / Stolvizza and then for the settlement Korito / Coritis. On a narrow and occasionally steep road we drive to the settlement Korito / Coritis where there is a parking lot.
Access is also possible on a narrow and winding road through the border crossing Učja.
Path description:
If we've parked at a parking lot in the village Korito, we return along the road through two turns to the beginning of the footpath where there are signposts. We proceed on path 642, initially walking on a footpath through the forest parallel with the stream Suhi potok. The path then turns left, crosses the riverbed of the stream, and begins ascending through the forest. Further, it ascends quite steeply through the forest for a long time, with the steepness rarely decreasing. Higher up, the path leads us to a crossing near the mountain pasture Spodnje Brdo (Berdo di sotto). We continue right; the left path leads to the mentioned mountain pasture, where there are some ruins and a few renovated buildings.
From the crossing, the path continues mostly steeply ascending through the forest, passing some gullies. The path then veers slightly right and soon crosses the riverbed of the stream, which we can hear below us for some time. After ascending for a while, the forest thins, and beautiful views open up through the valley of Rezija and the peaks above it. The ascent continues through some dwarf pines and bushes, and then the path brings us to the mountain pasture Planina Kanin (Casera Canin), where the cottage is located.
Immediately after the cottage, we turn left onto a grassy small ridge where the quite abandoned path Via Normale Resiana begins. On this section, the footpath is mostly not visible, and after a short ascent, we notice the first faded blazes. Here, we ascend past some larches and cross a grazing fence. Further, we continue ascending on a grassy slope, guided by faded blazes and occasional cairns, which are quite rare on the grassy slope. Higher up, as the grassy slope widens, the path runs more along the right side of the slope. As we approach the ridge, the grassy slope becomes quite steep, requiring a bit more caution, especially when wet. Since the footpath is mostly not visible here, orientation in foggy conditions is very difficult. We carefully follow the blazes and cairns, ascending the steep slope all the way to the mentioned side ridge, from which a view opens toward Vrh Laške Planje and the border ridge.
Here, the path turns left and runs near the less distinct ridge. Later, the ridge narrows, and the path leads us past a memorial with a cross. The footpath becomes occasionally slightly more visible, and the terrain grows increasingly rocky. We continue following the blazes and cairns, ascending the rocky slope all the way to Pod Kaninom, where we reach the border ridge. Here, we also join the path Visoka Rezijanska pot.
We continue left along the ridge, which is quite wide in this section and partly covered with grass. The path here is marked with red triangles. The ridge then narrows slightly, and a steeper ascent begins. Further, we ascend toward Mali Kanin, briefly avoiding the ridge on the left side and climbing on gravel. The ascent continues on a slightly more rocky ridge to Mali Kanin, where there is also a cross.
From Mali Kanin, we proceed along the ridge toward Visoki Kanin, which is already visible ahead. On a steeper section, we again avoid the ridge on the left side. On the panoramic rocky ridge, we soon reach the peak of Visoki Kanin.
If we descend through Vrh Krnice toward the bivouac Marussich, self-belaying equipment is also required.
