Access to starting point:
From highway Ljubljana - Jesenice we go to the exit Lesce and follow the road towards Bled and forward towards Bohinjska Bistrica. We continue driving towards the lake Bohinj (Ribčev laz), where we come to a crossroad, where we continue straight on the left (south) side of the lake in the direction of Ukanc and waterfall Savica. We follow this road to the bottom station of the cable car on Vogel, we then buy a ticket and go with a cableway to the upper station, which is the starting point for our tour, except if we additionally shorten it (for 30 min) with four-seater chairlift to Orlove glave. Chairlift works also in the summer season.
Path description:
We walk few hundred meters past Ski hotel Vogel, past the mountain hut Merjasec and on a ski slope downwards past the station Storeč and four-seater chairlift, which runs to Orlove glave. If we continue on foot (there is also an option to go with a chairlift), we follow the path below four-seater chairlift to the upper station of Orlove glave. We continue here further below the chairlift, which runs to the upper station of Šija. When the path comes on the edge of ski track of the ski slope Šija - Zadnji Vogel (little before the steepest section of all tracks on a ski slope Vogel), we go right and we cross the ski slope and we continue in the western direction below the slopes of Šija. We soon come to a crossing, where we can continue on the upper ridge path (demanding path) or on a little longer easy bottom path, which is aimlessly winding in all directions, until we join the path from the upper station of two-seater chairlift Zadnji Vogel. We go left and we come to a crossing, where a signpost for Vogel points us to the left upwards. The path here starts ascending and over the scree brings us on notch Vrata or Vratca, which is the second-lowest point between Primorska and Gorenjska from Mangart to Črna Prst (after Vršič). On the notch - little before joins the ridge path from Šija - a view opens up on Primorska. We continue right on the ridge, which is steep and demanding, but well-secured. After that, the path crosses slopes and it brings us to a crossing for Vogel, from which we continue straight in the direction of saddle Konjsko sedlo, to which further leads panoramic and gentle path. From the saddle, we continue downwards following the signs »Komna«. The path crosses slopes on the west side of Bohinjski Migovec (1896 meters). We are soon at the crossing again. Here we continue left (right Komna) in the direction of the mountain hut Koča na planini Razor.
After a shorter crossing, the path leads us past a smaller valley, where we step from the slopes of Bohinjski Migovec on more rocky slopes of Vrh nad Škrbino. Here the path turns a little to the right and over small rough scree brings us to a smaller gully, after which we go into a very short lane of dwarf pines. Above the dwarf pines, the path for a short time steeply ascends, and then it flattens and crosses steep scree towards the right (this part is usually in the early summer still covered with snow, therefore then crampons and ice axe are mandatory). The path ahead on the left side bypasses a smaller sinkhole, in which through the entire year stays snow. On the other side of the sinkhole, the path starts ascending steeply towards the notch Škrbina, which we reach after approximately 15 minutes of additional ascent.
When we step on Škrbina, a nice view opens up on Primorska side, and at the crossing, we continue left on the south side of the ridge in the direction of Vrh nad Škrbino (straight downwards mountain hut Koča na planini Razor, right Tolminski Kuk).
The path then on a steep, slightly crumbly slope brings us on steep northern slopes of Vrh nad Škrbino. Here we get to the first steel cables, by which we are steeply ascending. Higher, we turn to the right, where with the help of few stemples we again ascend on the south side of the ridge. On the south side, the path few more times steeply ascends by the steel cable, and then the path becomes gradually less demanding. Next follows approximately ten minutes of walking on a panoramic ridge towards the summit. Few meters below the summit from the right joins also an easier path from the mountain pasture Razor.
Further follows a descent on the ridge towards the east. The path isn't marked, but is well visible. The most steep sections are soon below Vrh nad Škrbino (at most partly demanding difficulty of the path). Because of a view on Primorska and on Bohinj side, the path is a real pleasure. The path then descends below the height of Meja, so in the last part of the path, we need to ascend again, to reach the peak.
Return is possible eastern on the ridge over Rušnati vrh to mountain pass Globoko.
