Gradišče nad Sotesko (Soteska)

Description of mountain:
Gradišče above Sotesko (also Soteska) is a 724-meter-high hill, situated on the border between the settlements Koroška Bela and Potoki, in the municipality Jesenice in Gorenjska. It's a less noticeable peak to the average eye, which had a far more significant role for surrounding settlers in the distant past than it does today.
Its field name already tells us something about this. When there was no accumulation dam for the Moste power plant right next to the hill below its southern slopes, the river Sava flowed through a gorge in this area, from which part of the name has been preserved. In the late Roman period (1st-4th century AD. . ), the peak above the gorge, in connection with the higher-lying mountain cottage Ajdna, represented a strategically important entry (or exit) point to the Zgornjesavska Valley, as the "via Chreinariorum" - the path Pot Kranjčanov, which connected Kranjska, Koroška, and Furlanija, ran nearby. To ensure that this late Roman Gorenjska path and the settlement on Ajdna were properly secured and defended, a walled defensive military tower-like fort or small stronghold was built above the Sava gorge. From this comes the second part of the field name Gradišče.
Today, at the top of the hill, we encounter the ruins of a wall and certain terrain features that testify to the existence of a fort in the distant past. From the top, which offers little view of the valley due to the forest, we can see the neighboring Ajdna, and from the path, we can look both into the Ljubljana Basin and the Zgornjesavska Valley.
