Common Crane (Grus grus)

The Common Crane (Grus grus) is regarded as one of the most powerful migrants, which hikers in Slovenia most frequently observe during spring and autumn migration, when in large flocks it flies over our regions. These are large and elegant birds with a long neck and long legs, which during flight, like storks, hold their neck fully extended. We recognize them by their grey plumage and characteristic call resembling trumpeting, which can be heard very far, often before the flock is even spotted in the sky. In the air, they most often fly in orderly formations in the shape of the letter V or in long lines, enabling them to overcome air resistance more easily over long distances.
They grow to a length of up to 130 centimetres, and their wingspan can exceed two metres by a considerable margin, placing them among the largest European bird species. Although they rarely breed in Slovenia, our regions, especially wetlands and fields, are important stopover sites where flocks rest and regain strength during their arduous journey. They feed on a very diverse diet, from grains and fruits to smaller animals such as insects and amphibians. Observing a flock of cranes gliding high above the hills towards their destination is a special event for any nature lover, heralding the change of seasons and reminding us of the wonders of bird migrations.
