European Robin (Erithacus rubecula)
The European Robin (Erithacus rubecula) is one of those birds that hikers in the mountains most often encounter up close, as it is naturally very curious and often unafraid of humans. Its most recognizable feature is the bright orange-red throat and face, which strongly contrasts with the olive-brown back and light belly. Around the orange patch on the breast, it has a characteristic grayish border, and its eyes are large, black, and expressive. It grows to a length of 14 centimeters and is known for its beautiful, melodic song, which we often hear in forests early in the morning or late in the evening, when most other birds have already fallen silent.
In the mountainous world, it prefers to stay in dense undergrowth, bushes, or at forest edges, where it searches for food on the ground, such as insects, spiders, and snails; in winter, it gladly feeds on berries. It is considered a distinctly territorial bird that boldly defends its territory against other conspecifics. Since it often stays near alpine huts and gardens, it always enlivens our trip into nature with its presence and fearlessness. The European Robin nests in hidden tree cavities or among tree roots; in Slovenia, it can be encountered along mountain trails in all seasons, as only part of the population migrates to warmer regions in winter.
