Magpie duck (Anas platyrhynchos domestica)

The Magpie duck with the scientific name Anas platyrhynchos domestica immediately catches the eye with its contrasting black-and-white plumage and is considered one of the most colorful and interesting breeds of domestic duck. Its body is adorned with irregular black and white patterns that vary from bird to bird, giving each individual a unique appearance. It differs from its ancestor, the wild mallard, by its slightly larger build and unmistakable pied pattern, which offers less camouflage in nature but makes it much more popular on home farms and along waterfront paths.
In nature, they are most commonly encountered near bodies of water, where they compete with other water birds for food. They are highly social creatures that spend most of the day dabbling in water with their bills, searching for aquatic plants and small invertebrates. Due to their curious nature and quick adaptation to human proximity, they are frequent companions of hikers on lower-lying trails, where their liveliness brightens every stop by the water.
An encounter with these colorful ducks reminds us of the biodiversity shaped by humans through selective breeding over centuries. Their presence in our environment testifies to the interweaving of wild nature and domestic husbandry, which together create the picturesque image of the Slovenian countryside. Observing their peaceful swimming gives us a moment of relaxation and connects us with the simple rhythm of life along our streams and lakes.
