Ostrich (Struthio camelus)

The African ostrich with the scientific name Struthio camelus is the largest bird in the world. Although its native habitat is far away, it is increasingly encountered on mountain farms and pastures throughout Slovenia. It is recognized by its long, almost bare neck, strong legs, and characteristic plumage, which is black in males and brown-gray in females. It is an extremely interesting animal that, despite its size, cannot fly, but is therefore one of the fastest runners on land.
In our environment, ostriches have surprisingly well adapted. They are extremely curious and alert, and from the top of their long neck, they easily observe events far around. With their large eyes, which are even larger in volume than their brains, they have an excellent view of the surroundings, which in nature allows them to detect danger in time. Ostriches are also known for their exceptional endurance and strength, as they can drive away even larger predators with a powerful kick of their legs.
Encountering these exotic inhabitants on a mountain trail always arouses amazement and enlivens the hike. Their presence in the hilly world testifies to the diversity of modern farming, where traditional breeding intertwines with more unusual animal species. Observing a group of ostriches curiously peering over the fence is a fun experience that reminds us that Slovenian countryside can surprise us at every step.
