Western green lizard (Lacerta bilineata)

The western green lizard with the scientific name Lacerta bilineata is one of our most beautiful and largest lizards, which with its emerald green color immediately catches the eye of every hiker. Adult specimens can reach a length of up to 40 centimeters, with a significant portion accounted for by the long and strong tail. It is recognized by its characteristic green body, which in males is often dotted with small black spots, and during mating season, their throat turns intense blue.
In nature, it is most commonly encountered on sunny, dry mountain slopes covered with bushes, along forest edges, or on stone walls. In the vicinity of Knežak and the broader Notranjska region, it is a common resident, where it likes to bask in the warm sunrays on rocky ledges. It is a pronounced sunbather, but at the same time an extremely cautious animal; at the slightest sign of danger, it darts with surprising speed into the safe shelter of dense bushes or among rocks, where due to its camouflage color it becomes almost invisible.
The green lizard plays the role of a beneficial predator in our ecosystem, feeding on various insects, spiders, and other smaller invertebrates. In Slovenia, it is listed among protected animal species, so encountering this "mountain emerald" on an alpine trail is always a special privilege. Observing this wonderful animal offers us valuable insight into the biodiversity of our hills and reminds us of the importance of preserving the natural environment that provides safe refuge for these creatures.
