Great masterwort (Astrantia major)
Description:
Greater masterwort (Astrantia major) belongs to the umbellifer family, flowers from June to August, grows 30 to 100 cm tall. In Slovenia three masterworts grow. This is the largest and most common. Two subspecies grow. We see it also in valleys. It loves shade, moist soils, and we will most often see it at the start of mountain trails along paths at trailheads, in light forests, meadows, forest edges up to 2000 m high. The hemispherical inflorescence is reddish-tinged. The involucre is greenish or pinkish with distinct longitudinal veins that are clearly longitudinally connected and envelop the umbellate inflorescence. Together with the involucre it looks like one flower—we call it pseudanthium. Leaves are palmately divided.
