Yesterday Vinko and I climbed the Styrian Matterhorn. At least that's what some call it. It hides well from views from the valley. The nicest view of it is from the road descending towards Mooslandl from the spot Gams bei Hieflau. We chose Radmer an der Hasel as the starting point, where we parked in front of the fire station. The small parking lot is free. Initially the path leads through the forest, steeply uphill to the rock barrier, over which an attractive ledge leads left to the saddle Gespitzer Stein (1556m). From there first through the forest to Lugauer Plan, steep grasses, and up them to the ridge. In the summit part the ridge is rocky. Towards the top the ridge flattens and offers a nice panoramic view over surrounding peaks and deep into the closed valley from where we came and towards Hieflau. At the top there is a metal cross. We continued the path further along the ridge, meanwhile descended deep into the notch and again uphill to the eastern peak (Lugauer Ostgipfel, 2206m). From there steeply left downhill and below right towards Hochpolster. However, we had already before turned our own way downhill to the forest road and thus shortened the bend. Then along the road we returned past Kalberleiten back to the saddle Gespitzer Stein. After the closed loop, back down the steep path to the valley. Lugauer is really an imposing double peak, technically undemanding, fitness-wise it requires some effort. Our pensioners' loop took cca 8 hours (cca 1500m total ascent).
