Schneeberg

Schneeberg with its two peaks Kaiserstein-2061m and Klosterwappen-2076m is the easternmost and at the same time the northernmost two-thousander of the Alps, practically the house two-thousander of Vienna.
We started the trail at the Weichtalhütte-547m, through the Weichtalklamm gorge, past the Kienthalerhütte-1380m, along the southern Grafensteig trail to the Klosterwappen summit and Kaiserstein.
Descent along the western trail past Kienthalerhütte and along the Ferdinand Mayer trail to the starting point.
Almost no snow left, but it was extremely windy.

Schneeberg and neighboring Rax also have quite a few climbing routes. From the easiest to the hardest. Protected and unprotected. I ventured onto a few easier protected ones at the end of my vacation this year.

In the Schneeberg area there is the Hohe Wand nature park with at least two starting points: Pension Seiser Toni and the first bend of the toll road to Hohe Wand (toll collected only on weekends and holidays).

From the Graz-Vienna highway, exit at Wiener Neustadt West and in the first case follow the sign for Grünbach, in the town itself there is a sign for the mentioned pension at the church. In the second case follow the sign for Hohe Wand park and after the toll park at the first bend, where there is also an info board.

As said, there are many climbing routes, I chose Wagnersteig(A/B) from the first starting point and descended the normal way, and from the second starting point Frauenluckensteig(B) and descended via Völlerin(A).

More in the photo comments. Just a warning that it's a wall very exposed to falling rocks, which are mostly triggered by chamois, which are everywhere there (90% chance you'll encounter one). Helmet mandatory! Self-belaying recommended on Frauenluckensteig, on the other two only for kids and beginners.

On the neighboring Rax you can get there in many ways: from normal to climbing, protected, easy, hard, tough... trails. You can even take the cable car with which Vienna's fine folks probably arrive up. mežikanje

I chose two easier via ferratas: Camilo-Cronich Steig(A) and Wachthüttlkamm(A/B - NOT the same as the above-mentioned Weichtalklamm, same access - from Weichtalhaus!).

First day I climbed Camilo Cronich to the upper cable car station, descended via Gsolhirn-Weg (easy non-steep trail) to Hirscwang, from there a nice forest trail along the stream back to Kaiserbrunn (1. Wiener Wasserleitungsweg).

Second day I went up Wachthüttlkamm to Otto Haus (otherwise less than an hour walk from the upper cable car station) and descended via Glognitzerhütte and Kessgraben (not recommended because the trail is overgrown and very nasty when wet - if at all then to Glognitzerhütte, to which the trail is very nice and then down the road that branches off from the Kessgraben trail 15 min after leaving the hut). At the end we have another 15 min to Weichtalhaus on the main road.

Both via ferratas can also be combined e.g. up Wachthüttlkamm, which is more interesting, down Camilo Cronich. But need to warn that the latter is steep and somewhat slippery for descent when wet. And not a joke for ascent either. Technically not demanding as only a few spots are protected, but it's physically demanding as we gain 1100 meters in three and a half hours.

For the via ferratas self-belaying not necessarily needed (except maybe for kids and unaccustomed), helmet here not as essential as on Hohe Wand, but as always on such tours recommended.

Access: On the expressway S16 which branches off A2 (Graz-Vienna) to Glognitz, exit there and towards Reichenau. About 5-10 km further to Kaiserbrunn. Starting point for Camilo Cronich right before the sign for end of this town. In the town there's free camping by the road, full of Czechs and Easterners of course, if that doesn't bother you. mežikanje

For Wachthüttlkamm drive a bit further to the above-mentioned Weichtalhaus, starting point a bit before the snow gallery (sign for this trail directs into the forest).

I didn't manage to get to Schneeberg on this year's May holiday because it still lives up to its name for now mežikanje

But in five years I've progressed on via ferratas and was ready for Haidsteig in the Rax massif (report to follow), one of the most popular via ferratas in the Eastern Alps. Recommend to all with at least some mileage on somewhat harder via ferratas.

Official difficulty is C/D but reaches that only at two short spots, the first I didn't even notice... In the first third difficulty around B/C, C, rarely less. Last third, from the Mary statue with logbook onwards max B.

The only downside is precisely the popularity, read: queues (mostly Czechs), including clueless ones (in my case they were Hungarians), who can cause jams...

Would also warn about descent over the scree of Holzknechtsteig (tedious, poorly marked), maybe better over Preinerwandsteig?

On Hohe Wand I climbed Ganghofersteig and Steirerspur.

Will anyone go to this Schneeberg in the coming weekends? I'd happily join and contribute to transport. I'm from the Graz area, where I now live.

Since I don't know the mountain yet, I'd rather go with someone who knows it.

If anyone is going, can message me privately. Thanks.mežikanje

Schneeberg is fully wintery as of today. Chamois accompany you all the way, all huts are already closed...

Some yesterday's impressions from the ascent to Schneeberg.
The path Losenheim - Edelweißhütte - Schauauerstein - Kaiserstein - Klosterwappen - Witzanikreuz - Edelweißhütte - Losenheim is normally passable.
The weather was clear, higher up very windy.

Best, Tadej
