Yesterday's cloudy day we exchanged for pleasant, warm sun above Bad Aussee. At Grundlsee it was -15, in the hamlet Tressensattel where we parked at 8:10, already pleasant -6. There is an arranged paid parking lot there, 9 euros daily. The first part of the trail is steep, through the forest, then through the clearing caused by the storm years ago, to the first summit Ahornkogl, a few dozen meters off the trail. The trail is very scenic, with some benches at spots where you'd just sit and enjoy. Below left is Grundlsee, right Altausee. Opposite Altausee is Loser with ski slopes. To Ahornkogl the trail was partly bare, partly icy, partly snowy. The snow cover increases with altitude. We quickly stowed the snowshoes by a spruce in the forest, hoping the trampled trail to the summit would hold. From Ahornkogl the trail runs among pines right of the ridge. No winter markers, so following would be harder without tracks of a couple of predecessors. There are quite a few crossings, and it would be harder to find the best ones in the snow. The summit is very panoramic, from other peaks in Totes Gebirge, Grimming, Dachstein chain, all the way to Watzmann is visible. Under the cross is an imposing wall dropping to Altausee. Upon looking at it, especially later from below, nostalgia arises. Nothing, we must take what is given to us now. On the return, obligatory honey cakes, which are excellent in Bad Aussee.
