We're going on vacation to Switzerland with the family, and I'm wondering what's most worth seeing or visiting? We're mainly interested in some mountains, trails, lakes, maybe Zermatt?

Zermatt, you won't regret it. I was there in winter, it was super. You have a gondola to Little Matterhorn and a cogwheel train to upper town. Super.

Just for info, all gondolas and trains going to mountains in Switzerland are ridiculously expensive. Otherwise, Zermatt definitely. Both the village itself, and by gondola to Black Lake (Schwarzsee) under Matterhorn and higher to ice palace (Ice Palace). I recommend also viewing Grindelwald (Eiger north face) and ride from Grindelwald to Jungfraujoch - viewpoint, possible walk on glacier (just not too far). Easiest to Google the mentioned three places, tons of info on net. Oh, and don't forget Swiss vignette at entry to Switzerland! Yeah, I miss those places. Since you wrote going there with family, definitely treat yourselves to lots of chocolate and cheese! mežikanje

We've already been to Interlaken and Jungfraujoch in winter, when we watched downhill in Wengen. It was crazy. Weather great.

What about St. Bernard Pass? Monastery, St. Bernards!
Maybe Saas-Fee? They have crazy bungee, you jump from the gondola over a deeeep abyss!
Otherwise Zermatt, it's really the best. The town itself and surroundings. Lots of options for walking trips, of course lower, under glaciers. Maybe rent skis for a day. Definitely museum visit too.

Thanks.

The trip isn't really that tough, more like pure enjoyment.
But we were apparently the 'attraction of the day' for skiers on the big ski area under Eiger.
From afar it really looks wilder...

The whole five-member family swapped this year's Adriatic vacation for a seven-day stay in the Swiss mountains. We stayed in the mountain valley of Saas-Almagell, which is at 1700 meters above sea level. As temporary residents of this valley, we got special cards with which we could travel unlimited for free on cable cars, gondolas and bus transport in the area of four settlements: Saas-Fee, Saas-Grund, Saas-Almagell and Saas-Balen. This made staying in proverbially expensive Switzerland much more bearable, although prices there aren't exactly low. Roughly speaking, I'd say multiply our shop prices by 2, in inns, mountain huts and cafes at least by 3, or more. Interestingly, hut prices don't rise with altitude, they're similar to the valley, which isn't the case with us.
Still, mountainous Switzerland showed itself in a positive light to us with its natural beauties, mighty snow-covered four-thousanders and glaciers, and calm friendly inhabitants. The living climate is pleasant, a bit harsher and with lower temperatures than ours, water is top-notch anyway, as daughter would pull the tap all the way home.
view of the village Saas-Almagell, where we stayed1
Mattmark lake above the village2
Due to melting glaciers, there is plenty of water everywhere.3
nicely arranged cemetery in the village4
with the chairlift we rode to the Furggstalden hut, which lies above the village5
nearby there is a pleasant path with two suspension bridges6
interesting self-loading trucklet, of which there are swarms there7
from the neighboring village Saas-Fee we ascended by gondola and cogwheel railway all the way to the Eisspavillon at 3500 meters8
along the groomed path my son and I set out for our first and only four-thousander Allalinhorn9
there is really a huge amount of snow and glaciers here10
the Matterhorn also appears, which from here looks somehow modest11
the path is not demanding, except for glacier crevasses and fully winter conditions12
ridge to the summit13
view to the starting point14
mightiest giants of the Alps15
the next day we took the gondola to the opposite side of the valley to the 3200 m high Hohsaas16
we spotted tiny ants advancing towards the summit of the mighty and 4027 m high Weissmies17
at around 3000 meters glaciers are relentlessly disappearing18
at this height flowers rarely find their space19
we descend to the slightly lower Kreuzboden, from where we behold the peak of Fletschorn20
this is a real paradise for children, as it offers beautiful views and lots of playground equipment21
among others also a children's raft22
The views are of course beautiful23
Mountain scooter for an interesting descent into the valley24
Even the female part of the family masters it25
Idyllic mountain hamlets along the path26
We also visited Zermatt in the neighboring valley and took the cog railway to Gornergrat. Mighty Monte Rosa in the picture27
This time Matterhorn was shyly hiding28
Under glaciers characteristically green glacial lake29
The path also took us to nearby French Chamonix from where we ascended by gondola to famous Aiguille du Midi30
Mont Blanc had donned a foggy hat but something was still visible31
Quite a few were descending the ridge hoping to reach the giant of the Alps from the opposite side32
Some spent the night down here33
The panoramic eggs weren't running this time34

Switzerland, August 2018, Part 1. Oeschinensee, Mannlichen and Kleine Scheidegg.

Summer is the time when most people take a somewhat longer break and go on well-deserved vacations ... and that's right.
I spent this year's vacation in the beautiful surroundings of the Swiss mountains, namely in Grindelwald under the Bernese Alps.

Switzerland, August 2018 part 2 ... Northface-Trail and Grosse Scheidegg

The second part will take us on a nice trip starting in the alpine village Murren, by bike to Grosse Scheidegg and on to Grindelwald - First. From there we walk to the picturesque lake Bachalpsee and at the end bike back down to Grindelwald.

Switzerland, August 2018 3. last part ... Bernese Alps, Grindelwald

In the last part, we'll head to Glecksteinhutte and enjoy the exceptional mountain environment. On the last day we'll play tourists too. One day must be for pampering. With the gondola we ride to Birg, from there on foot to the highest point we visited. Schilthorn or Piz Gloria 2970 m. Tourist spot offering nice views and they filmed 007 here ... so we'll turn into agents ... and try to find some "Non-Japanese" ... it'll be tough .. mežikanje

Royal tour to a mighty mountain. Hut 4545 m offers one of the best views in the Alps.

My friend and I climbed its summit on Saturday, 14 August ... and we had plenty to see.
