Mont Chaberton 3131m

Our first high mountain goal in the Sestriere area was the three-thousander Mont Chaberton. The summit is entirely in France, but the border runs along its slopes. Although it looks steep, rocky and hard to access from the valley, most approaches to it are easy. It's known for huge military facilities from World War I placed on the summit and around it. Because of that it's also quite visited.

At the village Claviere we crossed the border and drove to French Montgenevre at under 1900m altitude. First we walked a bit on a gravel road that led us through a beautiful little valley. To the right above us stretched the Chaberton massif, below was the dry bed of Rio Secco stream. Higher we crossed scree fields at the valley bottom and on a very well-trodden path started ascending right towards the Col du Chaberton saddle. Here joins the path from Italian Fenils. Then the path in switchbacks took us to the vast summit with military installations. We had very nice weather, so nice views all around. Among others, we saw also Monte Viso, Rocciamelone conquered a couple days earlier and highest peaks of Dauphine Alps in France. We descended the same path.

Ascent takes average hiker good three hours, faster ones summit in just over two without issues. Worth starting early enough, as later there's practically no shade on the whole path.
