On the third day already quite sunburned from the high-altitude sun, I head to Val d'Isère valley and park at the end of the valley at Le Manchet 1960m. Here instead of Cascade valley (waterfall), I turn into the left branch of the final valley, where the path leads to Refuge du Fond des Fours (means oven or warmth), as the hut really stands on a sunny perch up there. Walking time is 1h 45min, I do it in 1h 10min despite long distances and low elevation difference. There are three huts standing here, one private, second winter room for spring ski touring, third mountain station. Despite detailed description from the friendly direct young staff to some peak not sympathetic to me, higher up I go my own way to the opposite end through pathless terrain. Here walking on long ridges is really easy compared to our steep Gamsji screes etc. Just need to watch the schist slabs so we don't slide on them into the valley, or when crossing glaciers so we don't become modern-day Ötzi. No altitude sickness felt, only at 2800m some strange air, above 2900m better than in the lowlands and I went up like a rocket. To the summit from the hut in another hour and 40min. View excellent all from Mont Blanc to neighboring high mountains.
