With its 968m, Lepetymnos is one meter higher than Olympus and thus the highest peak on the island of Lesbos. From the main town of Mitilini, we drive towards the town of Kalloni on a very wide road for about 40km. From Mitilini, we drive towards Petra or Molivos on a somewhat narrower and winding road for another 12km, then turn right towards the village of Stipsi and continue to the village of Pelopi, where a signpost in a very sharp left turn at the beginning of the village directs us towards "Ilias Peak" or Lepetymnos "Vigla Peak". Here there are also two signs, one large and one small, both warning that the road to the upper ridge at about 830m altitude is 6km long and suitable only for 4x4 vehicles!!! We follow this rugged road to the end of the ridge, where we park. With the car, you can drive another few hundred meters to the approx. 860m high "Ilias Peak" with transmitters. On the same summit there is also a nicely arranged little church with a pleasant interior and exterior. From the saddle where we parked, the path is marked with signposts where necessary, mostly with cat's eyes, on rare trees and prominent rocks, and where nothing is mentioned with aluminum poles with stuck-on cat's eyes. We follow the direction "Vigla Peak". The path keeps getting lost among low vegetation and rare trees and after 20 minutes turns into a steep rocky ascent, where you have to grab the rock. Passages on and between and over rocks are nicely marked with cat's eyes on the rocks. The rock is compact, and the scrambling is in my opinion around II difficulty grade. After a short ascent, about 15 vertical meters, you have to descend a bit more, then the path first disappears among boulders and later turns into a barren world with grasses. When we arrive at a new signpost, from where descent is possible along the marked path to the town of Pelopi, we gently ascend again, and in the last few vertical meters to the summit itself, scrambling among larger boulders awaits us again. At the top there is an abandoned small building, from which there is a nice view of the walked path, especially the northern coast of the island, as well as neighboring Turkey. From the top of Lepetymnos, a maintained gravel road is clearly visible that leads to the pre-summit from the north of the island, from Argenos, to an altitude of approx. 800m, where there are two larger transmitters. From there, there is also a marked path to the top of Lepetymnos.
