Kalnik is a mountain in northern Croatia, roughly between Varaždin and Križevci. I was unpleasantly surprised in a couple of conversations with Slovenian hikers who had never even heard of this mountain. Although it doesn't really dominate northern Croatia with its height, it deserves to be mentioned on this forum due to the wealth of various paths. This time I'll limit myself to the approach. The assumption is that the hiking goal is Vranilac peak (643 m), and indirectly the mountain hut which is about fifteen minutes walk from the peak (at around 500 m altitude). If you want to go first to the hut and then start the path from there, from the Varaždin-Zagreb highway take the Komin exit, then in Komin head for Križevci. From Križevci go towards Kalnik place which is right below the mountain hut. Orientation is easy as the hut, peak and old castle are visible from the road. The upper variant is quite long and quite impractical for hikers from Prekmurje and Styria. I suggest they take the Novi Marof exit from the Varaždin-Zagreb highway and continue towards Ljubeščica / Varaždinske Toplice. After a kilometer turn right towards Ljubelj place. This road passes under the quarry. Drive on it until after one bend you reach the new quarry. There turn onto the unpaved road through the machinery (you can park there too, but then five minutes walk through dust awaits) and quarry until you reach the forest. There you can choose several parking spots, best at the shrine of Our Lady of Hrušov. This path is marked 2, first follows the unpaved road, then enters the forest and after an hour reaches the mountain hut. On Kalnik everyone will find something for themselves. There is an educational trail, lots of easy paths, but also a couple that would get a very demanding rating. And just one more thing - paths on Kalnik are excellently marked.

Not even a minute from the mountain hut on Kalnik starts the so-called "Path of the Seven Teeth" which climbs over rocky peaks, the so-called Zub, to the top of Vranilac. I will try to put this quite demanding but beautiful path of alpine style as a description on Hribi.net because it truly deserves it. The path itself climbs and descends over seven rocks. Some teeth have more approaches, and each has its own peculiarity. The most attractive is the fourth tooth, where the ascent is made through a natural chute, the so-called chimney, while the hardest ascent is one of the approaches to the seventh tooth. What is also one of the peculiarities of this path is that there is not a single piton on it (actually, only two, but they are to prevent rockfall), no cable and no peg. Everything is as nature gave it.

Today (15.12.2012.) ascent to Kalnik on path no. 2. I didn't go to the summit, only to the hut. Kalnik is full of snow which prevents climbing the seven teeth. Also, it should be emphasized that access to the old town Kalnik is STRICTLY FORBIDDEN until further notice, which means no climbing on the rocks below it until further notice.

Today (26.01.2013.) ascent to Kalnik via path 2. Kalnik is under snow, car needs to be left at the quarry (further not cleared). Along the way about 30 cm of fine snow that fell on old frozen snow... To the peak from the hut via classic path and small bypass. Path 2 below the tooth not recommended, and teeth and climbing path under snow and impassable. Approach to the mountain hut from Križevci is passable and with winter gear you can reach the hut itself.

04.12.2014. Unbelievable, but this year first ascent to Kalnik. Ascent from end of quarry to hut via trail 2, back via variant 2b. Whole Kalnik in fog so no point going to the peak. Trail 2 slightly changed - when going to hut, where variant 2b joins, go on the upper track. Well marked. Old castle Kalnik and climbing routes on it still closed due to works...

27.05.2015. Ascent from Our Lady of Hrušov via path number 2 all the way to Vranilac peak. From Vranilac, descent to paraglider takeoff (so-called Second start), then to Zmijski viewpoint and then descent to Ljubelj-Borje road and back to car. Whether the hut is open, I don't know... From the peak one minute to the west there is a round plate showing what is visible in the distance.
