Klek 1181 m

KLEK 1181 m
Klek is a prominent peak on the eastern edge of the Velika Kapela massif, above the town of Ogulin. No matter which side you approach from, Klek always shows a different shape, but the view always attracts its vertical, 200-meter-high summit cliff and Klečice. Viewed from a distance, it seems like a sleeping giant whose Klečice are legs, and the summit cliff is the head.
According to folk tradition, Klek is the gathering place of witches, which have almost become a symbol of Klek and Ogulin. Klek's cliff was the first school of Croatian climbers. In it, a large number of first climbing ascents were performed.
Starting point: Ogulin
Marked trails:
1. Via Puškarić, walking time 3:30
2. Via Vučić, walking time 3:00
Elevation gain: 858 m
Markings maintained, better via Vučić.

Starting point Bjelsko:
Elevation gain: 553 m
Walking time: 1:15
Traditional and shortest ascent to hut 45 min.
Hut on Klek 1000 m open every weekend.
Famous Klek cliff paradise for climbers in immediate vicinity.
Other approaches:
Hreljin 5:00 poor markings
Vrbovsko through Kamačnik canyon 7:00
lots of attention due to many intersections with forest roads.

MOUNTAIN HUT ON KLEK (1000 m) is located directly below the imposing Klek rock face. The idea for building a mountain hut appeared at the beginning of the century, but the first hut was built only in 1958. The ground floor has a kitchen, phone booth and two day rooms, the upper floor and extension have dorms with 50 beds (there are also about 10 spare mattresses). Water from cistern. Usually open in summer weekends and partially stocked.
Approaches to the hut:

START: OGULIN /via Vučići 3h.

From Ogulin train station follow first marks through town, at 2nd junction left, then straight another 400m past traffic lights junction to concrete fence above Dobra canyon through Krlenac promenade. From there right out of town to shop in Vučići (bench with tables). 10m behind it starts ascent to first then second Bukovnik plateau. About 1km further (signpost) worth turning right off trail 3' to viewpoint at Pečnik peak edge for unusual view 150m deep. Follows gentle ascent through nice mixed forest, then through middle of gentle Malo polje (540m). From spring ascent through forest to Kneja sports-recreation center (560m), where there are playgrounds and cabins that can serve as shelter. Above Kneja exit to Ogulin-Jasenak road, left 300m, then right uphill through forest to Sovenica pass (700m) between Sovenica peak (850m) and Ostrvica (722m); locals call it Zakopa because, according to legend, bodies of Turkish soldiers are buried here. From here sudden nice close view of Klek. Gentle descent to meadows with few small springs at Klek foot, where we cross Bjelsko-Turković Selo trail, then very steep ascent on grassy slope 15'-20'/Mrcina to Klek ridge and join marking from Bjelsko.

START: OGULIN /via Puškarići 3:30
Through town towards Vrbovsko past Đulin ponor, gas station to junction. Turn left towards BJELSKO.
At first road branch turn left into Puškarići village. There weaker marking through village and gentle ascent along wooden poles/power lines to meadows. Soon exit to Ogulin-Bjelsko road, after hundred meters turn left.
We are in Ostrvica forest. Along cart track past former quarry/here comes path from Vučići.. Continue same way.

START: BJELSKO
BJELSKO (625 m) is hamlet of Musulinski Potok with few houses, orchard, inn and spring, all along road, important as closest road access to Klek. Parking possible. At village entrance, left of road, interesting natural rock formation like mushroom, so-called Visibaba. From house with red-white roof steep hiking trail up eastern and southern slopes of Klek. The surrounding meadows are habitat of many interesting, protected and endangered species. Passing Klek-Ogulin-Bjelsko signpost already close to goal/HERE OUR PATH FROM OGULIN JOINS. Soon two benches, then two sharp turns after which path breaks to ridge with thinner forest. Flat trail along ridge below famous witch welcome slab to hut on Klek.

ASCENT TO KLEK SUMMIT /30 min.
unusually interesting but not recommended for vertigo sufferers, avoid in windy/rainy weather when terrain slippery. From hut to summit trail left along contour passing small cave (5x4x2.5m) below overhanging rock. Soon trail forks: straight 35' to Klečice, right uphill 15' to Klek summit. To Klek summit trail climbs beside vertical rock tube and past memorial plaques of fallen climbers to grassy terrain. Over helipad plateau to summit in 5'. Though height not great, ascent gives high mountain feeling, especially exiting to grassy summit ridge with wide views all around.
KLEK SUMMIT (1182 m). Near summit small concrete helipad, on summit itself two repeaters. Views Bjelolasica, Bijele stijene, Risnjak, Sabljaci lake etc. On summit don't approach rock edge too much. Summit is stone dome ~10m diameter, now with repeater remains. From here wide view one side to Gorski kotar, other to Medvednica above Zagreb. Careful not to dislodge stones, fatal for climbers below. From fork to Klečice summit ~30'. After 2-3' path to wooded pass ~100m wide, then up ridge left very steep meadow (view to Musulinski Potok village), right forest. At top of meadow (1098m point) trail enters forest towards Hrelin, right very steep down weak path under Klečice peaks where carefully choose way to summit (for experienced hikers only!).

KLEČICE
(1062 m) huge crag s. of Klek summit, bit aside and lower than main ridge. Two rock hooks distinguishable. Narrow mountain ridge connects to main ridge, all around picturesque vertical rocks. Hiking return from Klek to Ogulin via Kneja and Vučići 3 hours. Over various beautiful flowery meadows with frequent views of Klek rock mass, no villages so landscape very natural.

STOŽAC 808 m.
If we want to detour to Stožac along the way, from Bjelsko we should go by road 3 km towards Ogulin to the bend where the white road descends to the right, and to the right uphill into the forest there is an ordinary cart track. Following the markings along this cart track, it is 20-30' to the summit. STOŽAC (808 m) is an isolated peak which is overshadowed in the mountaineering sense by the nearby Klek, so only true mountaineering connoisseurs come to it. On Stožac there is a small shelter with a stove, table and three bunks, in which over the weekend the local resident Mijo Stipetić keeps watch. With his own effort he arranged the access to the shelter by making a staircase of 303 steps (!), arranging several excellent viewpoints, the entrance to the nearby caves and the access to the rocky Škurini draga, which resemble cyclopean formations.

I haven't seen any post about the Croatian witches' mountain and symbol of mountaineering HPS anywhere, so here's this.
On our holiday 27.4. we went up from the village Bjelsko, which lies S of Klek, about 15min drive from Ogulin (A Zagreb - Split) at approx 600m. On the right side there is a marked turn right on the old house, where we also park. With numerous markings (they really thinned the beech forest) and info boards we reach after fairly gentle ascent the ridge and also the mountain hut on Klek. It is open only on weekends - but we were lucky - the warden was just cleaning up and willing for a shot of homemade. After the hut the path goes north further under E walls and after 10min branches SE upwards to the summit of Klek, where a transformer and remains of a military platform (I assume) await us and of course crazy views from Bjelolasica, Velebit, Gorjanci...
Further you can also jump to Klečice (rocky head on the S part under Klek) - additional 30min - to the summit is a scramble, or down the same path.

Nice afternoon trip to the rocky king of Croatia. Some pictures...

You can read quite interesting stuff about Klek in last year's October issue of Planinski vestnik.

http://www.pvkazalo.si/home.asp

Due to its "youth", the issue is not yet available online.

Iva, thanks a lot for all the information. Since that portal usually doesn't have much information or descriptions of paths to Klek, they were very useful to me for preparing and carrying out the tour on this wonderful mountain.

On Saturday I decided for Klek because it has been tempting me from the highway for so long, the path to the hut ascends all the time, towards the top there are some scrambles, but if wet it is not recommended because even in the dry the stones are smooth, views reach far if very nice weather.

Yesterday with Škofja Loka and associated Sava mountaineers from Kranj on a trip and tour to Croatian Gorski Kotar and Istria, one would say. Midway stop in our beautiful Žužemberk. Then straight to Ogulin and from some village on longer path to the witches' mountain - Klek. We have two approaches - we chose the longer one. But it needs to be known, because it is easy to get lost. Passing two pleasant huts, through meadows, some gully with stream and then steeply up. Good fitness is needed. Somehow midway it joins the normal path that starts below at gravel road by hunting hut. This path is a forest educational path equipped with panels teaching about ancient relics in this forest. To this junction we walk a bit over an hour. Now we have another good hour to the hut on Klek. The hut was operating. Here there was a lot of Croatian school youth - praiseworthy! The caretaker is friendly - allows us even backpack storage, because the ascent to Klek summit awaits us - half an hour walk. On the way we see climbers, this area is even protected with fixed rope. We pant up to the scenic subpeak, where there is a heliport. Just a little further is the Klek summit. The view is phenomenal. We have really wonderful sunny weather. Here there are two stamps and a logbook. The bravest decide also for the ascent to Mali Klek, which is already an alpine adventure with UIAA I and II grade - demanding, but short nice scramble on solid rocks that offer sufficient solid holds - in short, top enjoyment. On the return, also a visit to the ancient town of Ogulin, where the Uskoci defended the Austro-Hungarian empire from Turkish incursions in the 15th and 16th centuries.

First stop in Ogulin - Local museum (Mountaineering - alpine collection) is one of the HPO points.
Then followed ascent from Bjelsko to Klek, this time summit in sun nasmeh. Path well marked and normally passable.

Was yesterday at the cradle of Croatian mountaineering...

Up from Bjelsko via ferrata, down the normal path.
No snow on Klek, but quite wet and slippery. Ten minutes before Bjelsko on descent the rain started..
Hut is open!
Start from Bjelske...1
Ogulin from the hut2
Going to the via ferrata... but it's very slippery...3
First harder detail on the ferrata.4
Hardest part... C/D overhang on brackets... problem is the cable is much too far from the brackets...5
group from Maribor... they went the normal path...6
And finally on the top... 7
Unfortunately Klek has taken quite a few victims... one is a climber from Varaždin...8
Does Klek also have Robanov stan?9
Of course I'll come back... haven't been to the top of Klečica yet...10

Klek is the mountain above Ogulin, which can be seen from the slopes of Gorjanci and many higher Slovenian peaks. The shape stands out with the characteristic form of a rocky outlier. It imprinted itself in my memory in early youth when I spent a few vacation days each year in Bela Krajina. From the house of my grandparents there was a nice view to the south with the silhouette of Klek.
I postponed the visit from year to year, since the ascent due to the long drive and small height difference can hardly be classified as a hiking tour. I wanted to be at the summit in clear weather, as I had noticed it on many of my photos from the Kamnik Alps. Such a day "happened" yesterday after the passage of the cold front… With my wife, while clicking on webcams in the morning, we did not hesitate. Pictures are more eloquent than description. Every time I carry a few kg of gear, I wonder why… but when I compare the photos with those taken with the mobile phone, I breathe a sigh of relief. To Triglav it is 160 km and to Grintovec 130 km air distance. Access yesterday was safe only with hiking boots, but on the iced snow of the last 100 m it becomes a serious winter ascent, especially if the ropes are under the snow.
