Wilderness that really doesn't disappoint, especially if you meet a bear two days in a row , and fox, deer, snake... First we stopped in Kuterevo village, where they have a bear sanctuary. So close to the highway it's really worth seeing. After driving through Krasno we arrived at the parking below Zavižan Hut and I did a loop with two others: Mali Rajinac - Zavižanski Pivčevac - Veliki Zavižan - Balinovac. Then drive to Alan, near the road by Lubenovac shepherd huts we spotted a bear, he sat a bit watching us, then went his way. Second day, while all still slept, I head to Veliki Kozjak, top greets me with first sun rays and stunning views. Back to Alan and three of us with two vans go back to Zavižan, because we hiked Premužić trail reverse from others. One car waiting at Alan. Logistically tricky . Just starting to hike near botanical garden a bear crosses our path, not bothered, trots lightly toward Zavižan peak, us to Premužić trail to Alan, meantime jumps to Gromovača, Crikvena and Krajačev kuk. Northern Velebit really impresses and calls for return visit .

I've overnighted at Zavizan several times, so from experience I suggest you reserve sleeping by phone. Also tell Ante you want to eat at his place too, bean stew is always available....and Velebit beer too.

Velebit called me again , so I went again for two days. First I looked for the remaining 2 HPO points I was missing in North Velebit. Over Vratnik pass where Velebit starts, I descend to the turnoff for Stolac and drive to the end of the road in Žukalj hamlet. There a local with a hunting dog greets me good morning with words to watch out for the bear . Before the last house I turn left onto the dirt road and follow it right then a bit on my own to reach the marked path to Jadičeva plan peak. Easier orientation if at the last junction follow marks right on gravel road, no need to search for the right path. Once on the marked path, it's well marked and normally passable to the top. Then drive back towards highway or through Lipovlje village to Dulibe hamlet, where locals already await me at the start for Korenski vrh, the lady didn't let the smallest one onto the path, the other two went with me, one in front, one behind, to the top and back . Path well marked and normally passable, at start of rocky ridge stamp to the left, marks up to Kalić top, no path to Korenski vrh top. Stop in Kuterevo too, short walk among bears, then drive to Alan hut as I went a bit on Middle Velebit too ...

Velika Kosa, Balinovac and Velebit Botanical Garden After visiting the shop in Krasno village in the heart of North Velebit we swallowed a small lump, as the shopkeeper mentioned she met a bear on the way to work by the road But with the almost full parking under Zavizan mountain hut we could breathe easy, as furry ones keep a bit longer distance than people in these 1.5m safe times.. On a nice day we ascended first to Velika Kosa (1622m) along the grassy ridge from the saddle under the hut, the descent from it towards Balinovac hill (1600m) already hinted at somewhat more demanding terrain waiting later. Between smooth and eroded limestone rocks we descended to a meadow and later to a nice clearing with spruces with typical bushy hairstyles, where there's also the meteorological station. The well-marked path from the clearing to Balinovac summit was more demanding, as the ascent mostly runs over the already mentioned rocky base requiring caution also due to slithering creatures with zigzag patterns . To the summit part we climbed over a rock step, the most demanding part of the ascent on this section. But the views from the top certainly repay all the effort. To the end of Kvarner islands with Rab, Lošinj-Cres and Krk joins the northern end of Pag with well visible Golem otok. Nice view also to nearby peaks with Zavizan in main role, Middle Velebit and coastal hinterland with nearest town Senj. Descent from Balinovac was over scree but easier terrain than ascent on previously described path and soon we found ourselves in forest dominated by snow-twisted beeches, there we encountered first signs with pictures and names of mountain flora, sign we reached Velebit Botanical Garden. Soon on the northern branch of the "sign" path above Balinovac garden (circular trail) we reach the hut by the clearing of the botanical garden and ascend back to start. We'll be back

Hi, can anyone tell me if the trail to e.g. Balinovac is suitable for a medium-small dog - re sharpness of rocks and cliffs, exposure etc? Maybe some other peak more suitable? Read that the trail last part is gravel. Is that part especially tough for a fancier city car? Any parking still on asphalt then more walking? Thx for any info

Below link to mountain desc with two marked trails to it. Trail past botanical park no problem, other (from chapel) has just below summit one tougher spot (pegs) - where need to help pup over. Watch for snakes! Gravel was fine two years ago. https://www.hribi.net/gora/balinovac/30/702

True trail runner you've become, Boštjan, lately even under the bear sign. Just watch out for him, third time's a charm!

Tone, I watched out, but it didn't work. So yesterday to the heart of that wilderness, the "king" of Northern Velebit seems to have been resting. After snacking at the nicest parking lot, I went along the road to Škrbina Draga and then to Lubenovac. No branch for Golubič anymore, because they abandoned the trails to Hajdučke kukovi; with a little searching I found the old marks and followed them to the top, which was once part of HPO. At the top a stamp surprised me and of course the great views. Continued along the ridge to Hajdučki kuk, the trail is fairly passable. Then descent along the trail to Lubenovac, which is its own story , since it's no longer maintained it's basically impassable; good that I was alone, otherwise someone would have sent me somewhere... When I finally broke through to the road, continued to Lubenovac and then to Krajačev kuk, where I already knew that darkness would chase me and not I it. Return along the Premužić trail in autumn colors and at sunset; well, walking in the dark on Northern Velebit is already another story...

On the penultimate day in December we headed to Zavižan. Northern Velebit peaks we had done many times, so this time we chose the trail to Zavižan from Gornja Klada, where the starting point is. The trail is well marked. Above the pasture Babrovača at around 800 m the snow cover began to thicken. Due to snow drifts the trail was often hard to pass. We often sank to our knees. We also encountered bear tracks, which we assessed as quite fresh. The ascent took us over five hours due to winter conditions; normally the trail takes around four hours.
