Maybe not so far from me, first time on Ravna gora, not the last. Didn't know the path well, to the end of the asphalt, then further, left in the forest to the cross, then further. Path poorly marked, went up instead of towards Pusti vrh, straight to the saddle Velika vrata then half right up. Who knows this path, it's clear; I was searching, rare markings and lots of fallen trees. Seems rarely used. Marx, lajči, other pros around there, where do you turn left to go under the cliffs? It really drew me, nice.

In summer heat it's hard to get ticks because they hide. You can get something for € too and it's cheap! Today there were many hikers on Ravna gora. Paths were muddy and slippery.

Yesterday I drove on the AC past Celje, Maribor and Ptuj. On the way to Haloze I saw kurenti. Of course it's Carnival and we're in Ptujsko! Then to Haloze, from there across the state border Varnica and straight to Cvetlin which is just a kilometer or two across the border. Parked there and set off. Shame I missed in the description that you can park at Švec too. Would have saved trudging on asphalt. If the path had been forest, it would have been fine. At Švec I asked mum where to go up the climbing path. She hasn't heard of climbing. Maybe I expressed it wrongly. Anyway, she directed me to Pečine. At the marking on the pole I went left. Then indeed a walled spring and field, which by size can't be corn as the description on these pages says; anyway then I reached the forest, followed markings on rocks and came to the cable. Initial rock jump doesn't look that hard at first but I had to work for it. I'd rate it B/C maybe even C. Rest ahead max A/B. Some more cables and pegs and already at the cross. Short and sweet! Interestingly routed. At the cross I looked around and continued. Path drops a bit and joins the 'normal' path, then at the next junction almost missed the less noticeable right turnoff. After about 15 min I was at Pusti duh where the hut is still closed. Headed to the little church then to the summit. View tower unlike usual ones has no stairs but a ladder climb. For the dizzy who've climbed lojtra before, it shouldn't cause major problems. View despite cloudy weather wasn't bad: Medvednica, Boč, Donačka gora, Pohorje, Varaždin with its lake and further the vast Pannonian plain. I also saw part of some other lake but doubt it was Balaton, which can be seen from here only in clear weather. Then to Filićev dom where I fortified myself with 'varivo' of vegetables and grains and Velebit beer. Then to the educational path 'Balkon'. This isn't a usual educational path as most of it is secured with cable. Due to the forest it's not exposed and maybe suitable for not too severe vertigo sufferers. It's circular, can start at the balcony or from the Dom. Midway there's a junction where in the first case right, second left. I went from Dom and only from the other side saw that the path is closed. Reason unknown to me. Halfway I also saw cables and pegs steeply into the rock, tempted me to gear up and try but the ferrata is supposedly still under construction and also not yet marked. Ravna gora is already on that side of the border where they apparently have no prejudices against building new ferratas. From the dom back to the car on the easier path, at the end annoying asphalt again. At the oštarija another beer. It was full of Slovenes (probably come for cheap beer ) and I chatted a bit with one. Then to Kumrovec where they've nicely arranged the village as some 'ethno village' or open-air museum like those I was used to in Europe when I visited lowlands more than high areas Don't remember us having anything like that. One of the houses is of course the Marshal's. Didn't know that Richard Nixon himself was in Kumrovec! From there via Podčetrtek (where I fortified a bit again) and City Park in Celje (mandatory ice cream ) I drove home.

Today (15.06.2014) on Ravna gora. The goal was to climb the climber under the Balkon viewpoint. And we did it! But ... yeah, that ferrata is really demanding. Technically the pegs are rather sparse and often you need to use the rock to progress. Exposure comes in between too. Psychologically it's not a ferrata for the dizzy because in the last third it feels like hanging over a huge chasm (in reality it's not. But the rock is almost vertical). Midway on the ferrata you can choose the easier left variant (there we cross smooth rock slabs, which is very bad for my injured knee), the right harder variant goes through overhanging rock and the difficulty there would be D... . Don't know if anyone crazy enough will climb that ferrata without self-belaying, helmet needed too, parts are crumbly. To reach the ferrata, from Filićev dom go downhill on the educational forest path. At the lowest point of that path the ferrata starts, exit back a bit south of the Balkon viewpoint (in the description of the educational forest path, start on picture no. 16). I'll try to post a description of this ferrata here on the web sometime in the future (don't know only how to photograph, since the ferrata is really demanding and there's little space for rest). Once again - enough pegs, but often need to use the rocks too. Not for the dizzy. To compare it, easier than Lavamünd, but harder than say the climber on Rogatec... Mostly difficulty B/C. With me was friend Krešo, we also met Lajči!

This Sunday (24.01.) on Ravna gora. Start at the last houses in Žarovnica, then up the road to the upper end of the Hudi Viher gorge. The road flattens here and turns sharply west, but we took the well-marked branch east and steeply up to the former Juriša farm (better known as Jurišina hiža). From there is a nice view into the interior of Ravna gora. From Jurišina hiža along the forest road further north. When it turns downhill, to the narrow trail on the right and a bit by orientation to the hunter's hut. Then through the spruce forest belt to the "highest" peak of Ravna gora. Now down to the saddle Velika vrata (Nice view north - Ptuj and surroundings) then again along the unofficial path to dom Pusti duh (closed) and finally to Filićev dom. After a short refreshment down the Babice path, but with a detour to the Lapornjak path to the vehicle. Why "highest" peak? Until around 2006 the peak on the western ridge between the two huts was considered the highest at 686 m. Then in 2006 the peak on the northern ridge was measured and it was determined that it has 690 meters, as the villagers of Višnjica in the northern foothills had often pointed out. Even when viewed from Ptuj it seems that this peak is the highest. Thus in 2007 this peak officially became the highest peak of Ravna gora and a variant of the path leads to it. On the mountaineering markers and signposts it is still the "highest" peak of Ravna gora. But... Around 2012 the peak between the two huts was remeasured. The elevation 686 is the elevation of the Trije kralji church which is located a bit below the peak. The rock near the viewpoint tower was measured at 694 (some sources say 696) m. And this is the true highest peak of Ravna gora... Maybe only until some new measurements... With me on the hike was also my friend Cviko.
