Tulove Grede - 1120 m

Tulove grede are part of the Velebit mountains. They are located in its southern part. Not particularly high and not particularly extensive. It's huge actually rocky boulders, as if some giant had pushed them into a pile. The rocky area is characteristically local. The rock is extremely solid - wonderful for climbing. Battles took place nearby in 1992. There are still mines around so you have to stick to marked paths. With a vehicle you have to drive to the mountain pass Vrhprag. Where the chapel is located is the starting point and even a stamp. Then the path leads us somehow around Tulove grede and through the rocks to its heart. Scenes for the famous Winnetou film were shot nearby. The rocks are even marked. A quite demanding marked path leads us to the top. There are also demanding sections with steel cables in between. In one hour we are up. The view from the top is magnificent. We see the sea of course.

Under Tulove Grede we arrived on this sunny Friday via Alan pass. From the highway we turned at the Sv. Rok - Gračac exit, in Sv. Rok settlement the road to Alan branches off at the "Braja" inn. The junction there is not marked, but later it's a bit better with direction signs. The road, asphalted for good 8 km, goes through forest and is not very scenic. The later gravel is quite good, only the mine warnings didn't give the best feeling.. zadrega
We parked behind the windbreak wall under the Grede and headed to the top. Strong bora was blowing, but it calmed down temporarily to the Grede themselves. First we took a path with faded markers and soon realized it's not the right one. Nice realization next to skull signs on the neighboring hill.. velik nasmeh But no fear, the slopes of Tulove Grede are safe. The right, well-marked path steeply ascends from the parking behind the wall almost straight to the walls and later crosses the slope between the walls and a large landslide or sinkhole, while we first went on the path under the mentioned landslide.
The path to the Tulove Grede cliffs is easy, to the "gredice" you need to scramble a bit, to the very top even a bit more. We didn't go to the top as it was really windy on the Grede, but the views were still great. On the way we met quite a few Italian climbers.
To the Dalmatian side we descended to Obrovac on a nice scenic mountain road, which is slightly more beaten than the one over Alan pass.
Recommended!

The view reaches also the higher peaks of Velebit13
Already on the Grede, in the middle of a turtle shell :-)14
Nice rocks, but the bora also blows quite strongly...15
Stone bivouac/bunker16
The views reach far17
So we head towards the summit (view back)18

To the summit one must descend over a drop using the cable and then upwards..21
We viewed it from a safe distance :-)22

Yes, the bora feels at home here..24

On the way to Dugi Otok we leave the AC at Sv. Rok exit and drive along the Majstorska road over Velebit. Considering I drove here for the first time by chance 10 years ago because AC was closed due to accident, I can say now everything is nicely marked and the road is normally passable.
The path to the top of Tulove Grede is nicely marked and very demanding, as befits the land of Winnetoujezik.

How is it now with Tulove Grede? Is it really safe everywhere or are there still mines somewhere?

In the area of the marked path to Tulove grede there is no danger. Risky areas are marked with well-visible signs.

Super! If you have this in the program for next year, I'll go with you. A couple of years ago PD Škofja Loka was here - it really is nice. Then we walked nine hours to the accommodation, also over the central peak of this part of Velebit. It was nice!

Tulove grede 11.5.2022
We leave Povljana after three days and drive towards home. Stanko also plans a drive on Maistorska road (built 1833) and to visit the top of Tulove grede.
The road is asphalted at the beginning and end, in between it's gravel. The gravel is washed out in some places by torrential waters. Thunderstorms on Velebit were every afternoon. From Pag we watched flashes, black sky and we ourselves were caught in two.
The path from the parking under Tulove grede is mostly easy and suitable for everyone. The last third of the ascent (from the first torn cable) changes difficulty a bit. Many turn back here.
We took looooots of time and used 2 hours 20min for ascent and descent.
We were all enthusiastic about the beauties.
