Vidova gora-780m-the highest mountain of the Adriatic islands.

Vidova gora (778 m) is the highest peak of Brač and the Adriatic islands. And if you are on some active vacation on Brač it is worth climbing it, either along the marked hiking trail from the south side, from Bol (approx 1.5 - 2 h), or by bike (well - even by car), since from the other side a nice asphalt road leads to it. No matter from which coastal place you start (see 1st picture - map), you will have quite a nice ascent, while the last part (approx 6 km) from the main road to the top has no steep climb, as the road rises moderately or evenly, and the pine forest provides pleasant shade all the way to the top. The junction from the main road connecting Supetar and Bol, between the places Nerežišča and Pražnice is well marked, and along the path there are also various other "educational" signs with local attractions. At the top, besides the RTV tower visible from afar, there is a half mountain hut or half guesthouse, with a large terrace and magnificent views down to the town of Bol and the famous Zlatni rat beach and the nearby island of Hvar. Vidova gora is named after the saint St. Vitus and a few hundred meters from the konoba onwards, behind the big cross, the remains of once a small and also the oldest church on Brač are still visible (at least that's what the locals told me there).

I was up there a few days ago. From the konoba (actually it should be a mountain hut) unfortunately nothing. The place is closed and falling apart, and everywhere signs that it's private property (the owner of this disgrace even dares to expose his name and surname). Let someone else claim that private property is the engine of development. The church remains you find a couple of 10 meters ahead from the terrace of the place, a bit further from the giant cross. Doesn't look like much. The thing might be interesting for historians and archaeologists. Otherwise, the ascent to Vidova is solid recreation. From Bol along the footpath it takes approx. one and a half hours of constant walking. Mountaineering boots are not necessary, flip-flops are not suitable either. Regular sneakers suffice, a harder sole certainly doesn't hurt. Last year I was up there also by bike on the road (also from Bol), but in that case you have a solid ascent for warming up to get from the coast. So that you don't return by bike the same way, I suggest a circular route, which is much more scenic than the route through the island interior. In this case, on the return from Vidova gora, just before the intersection with the main road, turn left onto the asphalt road leading towards Blače (on the map the road is marked 6191). You don't leave the asphalt until the end. You will pass the intersection where the gravel road branches off towards Blače, and at the end you reach a steep descent towards the coast. There the asphalt ends and you descend on a very steep and winding road (I counted 23 hairpin turns). I did the descent with a trekking bike, but more "by the balls". For more comfortable riding, a mountain bike is definitely more suitable. Then the panoramic road, which is initially still gravel, brings you back to Bol from the west side through Murvica.

This year I also went up, once on foot and once by bike. Actually, in the first case too, I set off on the path by bike and persisted until the path became impassable due to coarse gravel. During the ascent it didn't affect the time much, but during the descent a lot, since I was in Bol all together in a few minutes, the whole tour (bike ride to the starting point, ascent to the top, descent and bike descent back to Bol) didn't take me more than 3 hours. The bike ascent I did from the south side starting at the junction for Farska bay. Unlike last year, when the ascent still mostly ran along that steep winding road that is nicely visible on Google maps, this year the path is entirely routed on a new road, which is not yet asphalted. It is drivable with a MTB or trekking bike, road bikers will have to wait another year. The ascent on the new road is quite easier than on the old road, but due to the rough terrain still quite demanding. Once this part is asphalted too, the ascent will be quite similar to the ascent on the main road, which descends more to the east towards Bol. Otherwise, the hut/cabin/inn at the top is still closed and falling apart, so be equipped with sufficient liquid.

Today we went on a family trip to Brač, visited Vidova gora and swam in Supetar.

What happens if a scree lover goes on vacation to an island?...i.e. the highest Adriatic island Already two years ago, when I approached Vidova gora along the marked path , I was looking at the ridge that was calling for a visit. At that time I didn't know that it was actually a separate "mountain" Kaštel. From the top I treated myself to an "adrenaline" direct descent from Vidova gora to Zlatni rat, but... it would be interesting to find an "adrenaline" approach route too? . So this year, in ideal conditions (read cloudy weather), I set out to explore. I started from camp No. 1, right on the coast, following the momentary inspiration. Through the little forest, onto the gliha, to the upper road and along it to Ul. Zlatnog rata. Along it to the end, where the trail starts, from there right, into my favorite terrain, pathless! (sorry for the slightly larger number of photos, but only this way can I present the (ad)venture))
