Path No. 501 from Pontebba is closed. After an hour and a half of walking you reach the slope where water has washed away the trail in several places.

Since I was nearby, the tour isn't long and since my gaze always drifts to those slopes and that cross when driving by, I decided and drove to Tablje (Pontebba) and parked a bit above the center. The path marked 501 first follows the road, ends at two weekend houses and turns into a mule track, higher up into a nice forest path. While walking my thoughts wandered, looking towards the summit, wondering where the path is routed and how, since below next to the path number there's a sign "only for experienced" and since I've been surprised in Italy many times, I didn't know what to expect . Well, the first surprise was when the forest path leads to a sign, unfortunately only in Italian and the look behind it...hmmm, crazy, almost a road cut across the slope. I really sped up a bit, since I don't need any head injury gift, over a couple of fallen trees and I was already at the abandoned pasture Stavolli Scalzer. From there to the saddle Brizzia, the path is exposed in places, the view drops deep into the depths, but mainly annoying due to huge leaves and slightly slippery ground. From the saddle a short ascent and I couldn't believe my eyes... I haven't seen such a huge cross . But, despite the fog that day, the summit Monte Brizzia is an excellent viewpoint and spacious summit. Since it was super cold, I quickly took photos and descended the same way. Nice tour for when there's not much time... I recommend, but not in wet.

You are becoming a real explorer of those areas! Someday I'll decide to join.

Is this the path where there was a fire and due to erosion the path was impassable? (though the bravest, including late Igor, walked it anyway ) Does this mean the path is now repaired?

I found on some ITA site descriptions of the fire from 2006?! But there is also path through gorge Vallone degli Uccelli, which I know was open, then closed, then open again, now don't know condition and if passable?! Need to check that too

I headed to Breznjak (Monte Brizzia) above the town on the western edge of the Canal Valley with Slovenian name Tablja (Pontebba) on Easter Sunday. Somehow fitting the holiday, I first ascend the way of the cross to the Kalvarija chapel with nice views of the town. From there along the forest road first past one, then on footpath past another pasture. The trail later becomes a comfortable forest mule track, which at around 1200m above sea level emerges into the open and crosses the bare western slopes; the narrow path there is well gravelled, some caution needed. The mule track climbs back into the forest; I soon reach the first saddle (path junction) and then the second saddle, Brisiach. Here I leave path no. 501, which I followed from the valley, and head to the spacious summit of Breznjak, arriving in twenty minutes. The panoramic part of the mountain with the cross on top is a few minutes further north. Beautiful views await there in all directions – except north – plenty of views along the path too. Returned to the valley via ascent route. First snow on the path below Brisiach saddle, but avoidable. More snow on the trail from that saddle to summit, but around 11am thawed enough, no winter gear needed. Today with new snow, conditions probably a bit different, though not much fell. Nice and – except wind gusts – calm day, met only one couple of hikers on the way.
