Cadini di Misurina, Aldo Bonacossa Path

Yesterday we walked the very scenic Aldo Bonacossa path.
From Lake Misurina to hut Col de Varda by chairlift, then along path 117 all the way to hut Auronzo under the Tre Cime.
The path is very well maintained and secured on exposed sections (not a ferrata).

Photos of the wonderful surroundings are on www.petersfoto.si

Alenka said she wanted one for people and mine quickly drew her in; so we'll have to go to Sexten! Since Italians like to sleep in, we leave the comfort of the double chairlift after 9amzavijanje z očmi to them and just start on foot from the lake towards hut Col di Varda. There path 117 begins and over two notches-up down after cca 200m each time we rack up over 1000 elevation gain (from start) before after shorter-3rd ascent we stop at hut Fonda-Savio. Numerous hikers at the hut and also visibly full parking under hut Auronzo contribute to decision to change plan. We choose path 112-sentiero Durissini over pass Forcella di Nevaio (2610), then again a bit down-up-down to hut Carpi and from there on wide path back to Misurina. What can I say; Cadini are really nice subgroup, varied, paths arranged and secured where needed. Views, sights and details of various tower shapes... worth seeing. Little Carpi hut small but the "real" one in spot with godlike views. Well the location of F Savio hut is also great but...

Aldo Bonacossa was an Italian count, enthusiastic mountaineer and author of numerous mountaineering publications. In his honor they named the exceptionally beautiful path 117 through the heart of the Cadini mountain group. It runs from Rifugio Col de Varda above Lake Misurina, all the way to Rifugio Auronzo below the world-famous Cime. Landscape with picturesque towers, ascents to numerous passes and crossing steep, precipitous slopes are standard here. Protections only at the most exposed places, but the path is comfortable and not particularly difficult anyway.

We planned a circular variant from Misurina to the start of the path at Rifugio Col de Varda, in between visited Cima Cadini N/E ( … click ) and after refreshment in full Rifugio Auronzo returned back to Misurina. Altogether it came to 21 km and 1700 m ascent. Great loop, highly recommend smile. More in photostory …

Coordinates of starting point (Misurina parking): 46.577985, 12.253108

We started in Misurina, at the parking lot next to the Pope's residence.1
Rifugio Col de Varda, more winter-oriented than summer. Better to call for overnight stay.2
The start of the Aldo Bonacossa path is right behind the hut. Via ferrata equipment is not really necessary despite the warning.3
At the beginning a short comfortable path over scree follows.4
Then we entered the world of numerous towers, passes, beautiful views…5
Almost immediately numerous spires greet us6
Our path continued ahead and revealed the secrets of the Cadini around every bend7
Exposed sections are solidly equipped and secured. We had no particular difficulties8
There are quite a few ascents and descents over saddles, but you hardly notice them due to the beautiful surroundings.9
There are always enough direction signs. You follow 117 and that's it. I didn't use a map or GPS track at all.10
Along the path11
Some jumps are bridged by ladders, which is common practice in the Sexten Dolomites.12
Torre dei Diavolo or, as they say locally, Devil's Tower. Paradise for climbers.13
We continue towards the heart of the Cadini. Lots of shouting in these peaks. Climbers, of course :)14
Rifugio Fratelli Fonda Savio in a magnificent setting.15
Count Aldo Bonacoss, great mountain lover and author of numerous publications on the subject.16
Up there we also detoured to the ferrata Merlone, which ascends to the only marked summit Cima Cadin N/E.17
Unique setting of the Fratelli Fonda Savio hut.18
We leave the hut and continue our way.19
Signs for Rifugio Auronzo first appear, the end of the Aldo Bonacoss path. But it's still far away.20
Soon giants loom before us….21
… the path elegantly skirts them along their slopes.22
We came from there.23
Magnificent vistas. They cannot be described in words, everything is more beautiful live.24
117 … we follow it from start to finish.25
It's hard to foresee where the passages through the mighty rock formations are…26
… and as always a weak point is found…27
… it even goes like this.28
At the mighty rock face we ascended several dozen meters with the aid of fixed protections.29
View back. Until you hike it, it's hard to imagine where all the passes are30
View ahead. The traverse that awaited us in a few minutes is clearly visible31
The surroundings are wild, incredibly wild32

Another detail of the path…34
… and yet another35
View back at the section hiked and the numerous Cadini towers36
And that is our goal. Tre Cime de Lavaredo with Rifugio Auronzo at their foot37
Rifugio Auronzo, property of CAI, mainly occupied by tourists. A paid high mountain road leads to it38
The hut is nice, renovated. During vacation time and nice weekends it is packed full39
We returned on the other side, along path 10140
Lago d'Antorno in front of Misurina41
There were loads of them everywhere, but too big for the backpack :)42
Lago di Misurina43
Pope's residence. Parking and end of our path on the left side44

Midweek we walked this path. The girls after via ferrata Merlone climbed to the top of Cima Cadin N/E. The path is extremely picturesque and in pure wilderness. On the first part of the path there were still some travelers, on the second part we met only three. We slept in Rifugio Fonda Savio where service was excellent (overnight with half board for members 54€).
Second day upon arrival at Rifugio Auronzo the parking at the hut was full already at 9am, so tourists up only by buses.

Last year on Nov 1st I was at Rifugio Savio, also on Cima Cadin NE. The hut was closed but it was possible to sleep in winter room.

Can also park at Lago d'Antorno, if someone doesn't want to do the full loop, from lake marked path to hut.
