Cima di Mezzo - Keller Warte (2713 m)

The weather is changing our plans adversely, so that it doesn't drop to the level where some people play around with grammar on the forum and various other things instead of going to the mountains, we headed off to a peak planned for some time already, which is third in height in the Carnic Alps, but quite neglected due to more prominent neighbors. We drive to Forni Avoltri, from there to the hut. Nice fresh and clear morning quickly brings us under the Lamberteghi Romanin hut, but we don't go right to it since we turn right earlier onto the Spinotti path, which warms us up just right and we're already on the grassy promontories of the south side of Coglians. We cross the path leading to the summit and at the Monumenz saddle turn right towards our peak. Nice path 172 brings us in a good hour to the spacious and panoramic summit. The only annoying thing is the cold south wind. We find shelter behind the remains of the wall of the former military object, then descend along the ascent path to the junction, where we turn left and visit the already visited Creta Monumenz, which compared to Cima di Mezzo and Creti della Chianevate is quite poor, but still a grateful goal, unfortunately only for few. From Creta Monumenz we descend into the cirque under Chianevate, then straight across pathless meadows to the path leading to the Marinelli hut and along it to the hut, where a small refreshment follows. From the hut we go along the already multiple times walked and also skied path to the Morarett pasture and to the Tolazzi hut. So we've mainly done with the mountains of the Coglians group, but that doesn't mean we won't return.

We did approximately the same tour as described above, with the difference that we did the approach via the T ski piste from Coglians. And yes, because I didn't exactly know which spire is C Monumenz, we visited both peaks in that ridge, which don't differ much in height, but there's some scrambling in between on pathless terrainmežikanje.
Nice tour, few people around here, on Coglians it was quite buzzing. And no snow on the path!

Cima di Mezzo/Kellerwarte and Creta Monumenz

Starting point - third hairpin on the road to the pass and border crossing Passo di Monte Croce Carnico, separating Italy and Austria. Here a forest road branches off to Val Collini and right after the hairpin there's a small parking on the right by the main road. Currently you can drive almost to the alpine pasture (Casera di Val di Collina), but whenever I climbed there before, it wasn't allowed. Don't know about the future, but they recently repaired the road.
This time too I left the car by the main road and took first the forest road, then through the woods until path CAI 161 joins CAI 148. At the next marked junction I turn right and continue on CAI 149. From the junction of CAI 141 and CAI 171 I continue a bit on CAI 141, but soon leave it and turn into the valley below Creta di Chianevate.
Here begins the wild world of gray scree fields, enclosed on the north by the wall of Crete della Chianevate, on the south limited by Creta Monumenz. Vallone della Chianevate fully justifies its name of a dark, quiet, one might even say morbid valley, but still one that hides a special beauty, sensuality and sharpness. Remains of mines, cans and wood remind me of the horrors of past times, which left us so many picturesque paths that wouldn't exist without the war madness. No path runs through the valley, just occasional cairns here and there (I counted 3). They're not necessary either, as you just need to reach the head of the valley to cross the wall to the saddle between Cima di Mezzo and Creta Monumenz.
The crossing of the wall is also described on hribi.net. Thanks to the author for the idea.
The first half of the crossing is unprotected and not exactly a ledge to stroll to the rope mentioned in the description. It's still hanging and the same one, just in quite questionable condition, so I left it untouched. But it can be seen as a "signpost" already from the start of the wall. If anyone decides for the tour, it's highly recommended to bring some 15m of rope and replace it. After the rope I traverse a bit left, then up along the thin cable. Where the cable starts, the rock gets better. Actually it's not bad before either, just watch out for "frnikole" stopped on less steep parts of the wall. The climbing isn't hard, but airy underfoot.
Arriving at the saddle ends the pathless access part, as we join the marked path that leads over the forepeak to the main summit, from which Monte Coglianis and its Antecima Est are in plain view. Likewise, Chianevate is right in front in the opposite direction. Looking down to E-SE I check the planned continuation over the Crete Monumenz ridge, then head down.
The path doesn't go to the Monumenz summit, so I leave it before the summit part and climb to the top along the indicated gully, descend on the other side until rejoining the path and reach the entrance to Vallone della Chianevate. This sub-ridge path isn't described on the forum. In places secured with cable, which is unfortunately old and torn in many spots. If it tempts someone, it's unique. So artfully routed over the wall that I didn't miss the missing cables at all. Still wise to wear gloves if grabbing the still attached ones, as they're very rusty.
I continued traversing towards CAI 171 leading to Rifugio Marinelli, followed it briefly but lost it successfully. So I groped towards Lago Plotta amid loud marmot whistles in the beautiful rocky world. At the lake fog enveloped the world, which later drifted west. To the alpine pasture, above which are the Placche della Val di Collina crags, I arrived via the south side of the lower ridge, to the car descended via the approach path.

Our group hasn't been there yet, and no need to force the frog to jump back in the water, so gotta gowinking.
When we started at Tolazzi hut the weather was as forecast but no complete clearing as predicted, at the end it even sprinkled a bit. This time for a change a bit longer route past Marinelli but instead of via M. Floritza we detoured down the west slope to the junction with the path to Coglians. There right a bit back and past the branch to Pilastro to our left uphill branch over nice flowery meadows. The path is marked by somewhat faded rare marks and quite dense cairns-work of some idiot who increasingly appears on such paths that really don't need it. If Jacoppo was with us, he'd already pull the bocciardo from the pack and poke that rubbish. View from the top limited mostly to the Coglians group and from the sea of clouds only the top Julians on the east were visible. We descended then over Crete Monumenz, which Slavko would say isn't for elephants. The path is quite exposed, rare protections long overdue, drops us to the scree of the cirque between Chianevate and Monumenz. Well from there we went full right towards Marinelli hut over grassy knolls-here and there a cairn, but no real path until the sinkhole where the stream disappears on the meadow east under the hut. Followed ascent to the hut for a refreshing drink and gallop to Moraret pasture from where it's not far to the start. As an interesting fact, nowhere snow affecting passability. Obviously less snowfall in Karnic than Julians.

Who remembers how many times already at Ploče pass, as Passo di Monte Croce Carnico is called in Slovenian if you come up from the Lusever side, or Plöckenpass if from Austria. Morning promising, forecast even better, but unfortunately similar to previous times. Fog and clouds up top, scorching sun lower. Maybe vistas need special order, who knows...

Started on 146 towards Marinelli and higher turned to 171a steeply to Collina. Better to continue on 146 and later turn to Cima di Mezzo, as the junction from 171a is no longer marked. Anyway, high below Creta Monumenz, which I also had on schedule, weather nice, panorama scenic. Somewhere in its gully I met a herd of chamois, there it closed in and visibility became very poor. Some bolder ones let themselves be petted, we bleated a bit, then each went their way. I unfortunately wrong, by ear, so had to backtrack a bit to hit the path to Creta Monumenz and successfully climbed it. Visibility poor, views near zero, so continued to Cima di Mezzo. First down, then a bit more down, then up, quite a while up to manage to the top. Just before meeting some of them starting descent, then alone on top, enjoying dolce far niente, lost in memories and wishes. Views in fifty shades of gray style, fog similarly gray all around sky, some fleeting sun rays peeked once here once there. Descent much easier than ascent, often so, soon turned towards Piz Chiadin, somewhere there where I reached grass also to better views. Not far to Marinelli, there like on a sign, never so many, though I've been there multiple summers. Got drink fairly quick, no food for me, quickly gave space to others and continued descent. To Lago Plotta and from there to pass, of course with the damn tough climb to La Scaletta in between, where I joined path 146 on which I started ascent in morning. From Lago Plotta down hot as hell, sun burning. Great trip, everything about right amount or just enough, for views I'll come again smile
