On Sunday, 1 August, we climbed from the Meluzzo pasture along path 349 through the crowded Monfalcon di Cimolaina valley below Cima Monfalcon di Montanaia, which was originally our goal too, but later we didn't go there. At the path junction still below Bivacco Marchi-Granzotto, two Italians caught up with us and recommended path 360 and the ascent to the summit from Sella Tereza, which should be nicer. We followed path 360 then, although we had studied Stritar's variant. The gully below Sella Cimolaina is so devastated that it later deterred us from the Monfalcon di Montanaia ascent; we only went up to Sella Montanaia, just to look down to Rifugio Padova, then descended below the SE face of Cima Both to the saddle below Cima Emilia, which was in the plan anyway. There we bumped into Fabio, who thought the short descent below the SE face, where his friend Davide waited, too heavy. He even mentioned "bandiera bianca"; well, Marjeta convinced him not to throw in the towel right away. I pulled the rope from the backpack, fixed it and safely belayed him down those 10 m. Then we all climbed together to the summit of this wonderful panoramic mountain (I+), crumbly and quite exposed in some places. The summit has space only for two, so we loitered a bit. We did the first part of the descent without belaying; the lower part we rappelled on the rope. Then followed a short descent on pathless scree to Bivacco Perugini, where it was quite lively, all eyes and cameras aimed of course at the famous Campanile di Val Montanaia. Davide and Fabio said goodbye here; Marjeta and I enjoyed another good hour in the beautiful cirque in the warm sunshine. Then followed the descent on the quite crowded path to Rifugio Pordenone, where they sell beer in 0.75 l bottles for 7.5 €. At the parking 10 min below the hut we later noticed that path 360 (P. Tarioli), which we took to Sella Cimoliana, is closed. In the evening we left the beautiful Cimolaina valley (14 km toll not collected this weekend), drove to Claut and further to the equally long Sentimana valley, where we overnighted in the friendly Rifugio Pussa.
