Creton di Tul (2287) and Creta Forata (2462)

A beautiful sunny autumn day is perfect for the mountains and we went. Starting point in Pesarina (Val Pesarina is a valley you never tire of), target little-known mountain in the Pesarina Dolomites, with no marked paths on it. Just below Siera pass we turn right from the road onto marked trail 321, which leads to Creta Forata notch. The trail well known to us (we've hiked it many times) leads us first through beech forest, then under small walls with beautiful springs of excellent spring water, then through larch forest and along long hayfields all the way to the notch. From which we descend slightly to the north side, then under the wall via shortcut cross to the marked path leading to Creta Forata, at the spot where the trail turns to the characteristic ledge on the north side of Forata we turn onto barely visible trail to the right and climb to a similar pathless ledge leading under Creton di Tul. The ascent is really pleasant with excellent views. Under the summit section we choose the right variant, which is supposed to reach I difficulty grade, but far from it, as we easily reach the extremely panoramic summit almost without hand use, where we stay a whole hour, descend via easier variant to the previously mentioned junction under Creta Forata and in a moment decide to also ascend its summit where we've both been before, but why not go again. The varied ledge brings us to the saddle, then just good 10 minutes to another panoramic summit. Descent by ascent path. Wonderful, warm autumn day and it's hard to believe that up there soon everything will be different.

From the parking lot just before Cima Sappada a bit back along the road towards Forni Avoltri, then right on the forest road and on along path 320, which branches right upwards at some point. The path is not trodden, quite a lot of greenery which is moreover wet from night storms. At the start there are even some cables. Soon we reach the abandoned Upper Planina Geu, further a nice path leads us through the valley "Vallone della Creta Forata". Just below Forato, where the path turns onto a large ledge, we two go right towards Creton Di Tul, but soon turn slightly left and through a short gully to a small col. From here a few meters of cables, followed by easier climbing, soon we are at the "window", then somewhat harder and more orientationally demanding climbing, but no more than II+. The route is marked only with rare cairns, fog plays tricks on us a bit, mainly for orientation, but overall no problems. From the top we descend the normal route, over the "ledge", and below on a nice path to the Siera hut and via the ski slope to the valley, where the first raindrops appear from the sky.

After a few years again via the western ridge to Creta Forata. So as not to go up and down the same path we first went to Upper Planina Geu, and further through the idyllic valley to the col and up the western ridge to the summit. We descended past the closed Monte Siera hut.

8.7.2018, Creta Forata

A tour that was long awaited before it happened. From Cima Sappada past the closed Siera hut up and down the same path. Some snow patches in the summit area are easily bypassed, otherwise the path is fine. Attention to following red markers and rare cairns is not superfluous, as they show the easiest way up. Wonderful tour in beautiful surroundings, views from the top stunningly beautiful nasmeh

Exploring more remote areas we dedicated two days this time, which turned out to be a bullseye nasmeh. First day to Creta Forata and Creton di Tul, visit to the recently opened attractive Corbellini path and overnight at De Gasperi hut.

Second day we climbed via the 50 towers via ferrata (Ferrata dei 50) to Creton di Culzei, descended to the del Alpini col and returned via hills and valleys towards Sappada to the starting point.

For possible repeaters … path 321 from Creta Forata saddle towards Pesarina side to junction with path 231 is officially impassable, which you find out only after you've already walked it in the described direction zavijanje z očmi. More in the photo story …

Data for the first day: 20 km / 2100m ascent
Link to second day … Click

Coordinates of starting point in Cima Sappada … 46.566417, 12.719528

The morning was fresh, just right for walking2
The short initial part of the path runs through the forest, then the views open up3

Sympathetic signpost :)8
View back on the traversed path. It runs distinctly to the left and is nowhere too steep9
Wet, exposed section that is well secured. In frost, this part is certainly an ice slide10

The path is well marked all the way, one way or another12
Saddle Creta Forata. On the left is the summit Creton di Tul, which we also visited13
View back to the approach valley. The junction 323 for Creta Forata is poorly marked14
The path to the summit is marked with red dots. Partly leads over rock, partly over fine scree15
To the main summit one arrives from the Pesarina side16

To access the nearby Creton di Tul, one must descend back to the visible path and ascend through the grass to the top20
On its slope there are so many blueberries, I can't remember the last time I saw anything like it21
Well-eared company :)22
Creta Forata from Creton di Tul. The approach path is visible on the left23
Descent on path 321 towards Pesarina from Creta Forata saddle24
Creta Forata saddle. From here we continued to Rifugio De Gasperi25
Path 321. Missing sign that it's closed in this direction. We learned that only after traversing it fully :)26
First we had to descend about 400 m27
Landslide of steep sandstones, reason why path 321 is officially closed28
Fortunately, remains of cables were usable enough to cross the landslide without issues29
Why the impassability sign is only on one side of the path remains a mystery to me :)30
We continued on path 231 towards Siera pasture and met a very friendly bear :)31
This one adopted us and could not be disturbed at all :)32
Sentiero Corbellini, reopened after a long time. Of course we had to test it :)33

There are vast remains of the path that the tooth of time has gnawed to uselessness48

Another scree traverse50
We have to go over there :)51

Shark's fin :) Here the different composition of the ground is well visible. Next to good rock there is completely crumbled sandstone.60
Final muscle straining :)61
... and we have arrived at the De Gasperi hut.62
The hut is very nice with an excellent staff.63
Interior with a large dining room. Climbing schools gather here and that night over 50 people slept there.64
Part of the dinner, frico with polenta. Half-board for PZS members was 43 €. We also had the room to ourselves :)65
The GPS track of the first day is in dark blue.66

Hi!
Rif. M. Siera is open in winter, so it says in the handy Sappada panoramic map. The cable car in August runs every day.

Yesterday from hamlet Culzei, Val Pesarina to the summit. No luck with weather, summit was in fog. Path 321 at the place where you cross the sandy gully is secured at the hardest spots, but not everything can be secured due to loose and crumbly terrain, passage is demanding here. To Forc. Creta Forata notch you meet hardly anyone, more come from north side from Sappada. Path is normally passable. Path to the window east of Creton di Tul is very well marked and secured with cables and pegs at hardest parts. Just after Pesaris village there's a no-driving sign, but you can reach start without problem.
