Croda dei Baranci

We started in Val Campo di Dentro (marked turn-off left soon after Sexten) and in less than half an hour we went past rifugio Dreischusterspitze on the proper main trail. Past two turn-offs (first right and soon after second left) at the big boulder the larch shade ends. Here branches off to the right initially a bit less visible trail no. 9 and that is ours to Forcella del Lago saddle. To the saddle also leads a trail from the west from Val Landro valley, from where it is approximately the same. Here branches right a marked trail, which is secured with chains in a couple of places, and soon after we are already stepping on the gentle summit slopes of Cima Piatta Alta (2905m), which itself is a grateful goal as it is only 15m lower than the main summit. Short and quite exposed access to the main peak is not for everyone. Descent half the team did to the morning starting point, part to Val Landro toward Toblach. Beautiful tour, relatively undemanding especially orientation-wise. Except snow patch on saddle, completely dry and saw only a bit more white on Popera and SE slopes of Cristallo, Antelao and of course in Austria. Most of ascent Sexten peaks like on display but from completely different perspective.

This year's autumn is generous with weather and so we headed to Sexten again. They are close and one of the most beautiful mountain groups in the Dolomites for us. With our finger on the map we were looking for unvisited goals and first came Birkenkofel, also known by the second name Croda dei Baranci.

We climbed to it from the Campo di Dentro valley, which has its peculiarities regarding traffic regulation. From the beginning of July to the end of September traffic is banned for all vehicles, including cyclists, specifically between 9 and 18 o'clock. The ban applies in both directions. At the beginning of the valley there are automatic gates, at the last parking lot Antoniusstein there is a traffic light. During the ban a bus drives through the valley with a regular half-hour line.

From the parking lot we headed towards the Rif. Tre Scarperi hut on path 105. It is covered with stones in several places, so on the return we stuck to the supply road. At the hut we then turned onto path 8, where the destructive power of nature showed itself once again. This year we unfortunately saw numerous places where the environment has changed irreversibly. After some valley walking, at the next junction we turned right onto no. 9 and at the next one we stayed on it. The path gradually ascends the wide valley, the views becoming ever larger. Thus all the way to the Forcella del Lago saddle, where we finally branched off towards Birkenkofel.

The continuation is initially a mix of rock scrambles, then a long but completely easy traverse of the slope towards the final goal. But right in this bush lurks the rabbit, exactly where the final goal is big grin. After a long time of ridge walking, a huge 3G structure on the summit part first catches the eye. Yippee, is that already the summit? Yes, but that one is called Cima Piatta Alta, the real thing only appears behind. Birkenkofel, fortress of vertical walls, is right in front of us, it hid until the very end. First views do not look best, the poor path at the start is quite exposed, the continuation is not visible. Only the cross on the top of the highest pillar challengingly calls to itself. And we went ...

Passage opened after passage, tower after tower. Secured are only the most exposed parts, the rest are not. Not for everyone, not at all. Slowly we push under the summit part, where a vertical wall has to be overcome. Here there is no fixed cable, but the most unusual rope I have ever seen big grin. And precisely this rope is an excellent aid for the final ascent. With its help we were without trouble right on the summit in no time. Still obligatory photo session and then followed the return to Cima Piatta Alta in reverse order. On the spacious summit we made a break and let ourselves be pampered by goodies from the backpack and the warm October sun smile. The descent to the valley was still waiting for us, which proceeded along the same paths. There are no useful circular variants here.

Coordinates of the upper parking lot (Antoniusstein): 46.6847853N, 12.3051439E
We park at the highest parking lot and head towards the hut Tre Scarperi.1

A little was missing, and it would have taken away the resting spot too :)3
Hut Rif. Tre Scarperi, but here they are better known as Dreischusterhütte4
After a good kilometer of valley warm-up, we turn right onto path 95
At the next intersection we stay on the 9 and soon a nice valley lies before us6
The path is excellent, never too steep7
Birkenkofel is far behind the central mountain. The access goes over this massif8
Saddle Forcella del Lago. Here we have just turned right9
This is the continuation of the path ...10
Exposed passages are protected with a rarely seen chain11
Follows some free climbing to the higher floor12
Above, the walls overhang into gentler scree13
The continuation is an easy ridge traverse14
This seems to have no end. First time here and we don't know what to expect15
Finally we spot this unusual sculpture. Obviously we are at the top :)16
Oops, mistake ... only now our real goal is revealed17
We briefly assess the difficulty, then we get into action18
It's not a flat walk, even though it might look like it :)19
Quickly we are in front of the towers and the most demanding part of the access20
We attach ourselves to the chains and slowly bypass the vertical walls21
We are right in front of the last challenge. Helping us is an unusual, thickly braided rope22
Climbing the last tower. The rope has closely spaced knots in this section23
The two of us on Birkenkofl. We hadn't expected such a nice conclusion :)24
View of the rope that will also help us on the descent25
Here it's only reverse gear :)26
Already descending into the valley. We also meet some mountaineers27
In the heart of the Sextens28
Followed by the descent over the demanding wall ...29
And we are already at the chains. There used to be many of them even in our local area, now there are none30
View downwards to the descent path by which we will return31
We are already at the Forcella del Lago saddle. It is possible to reach here also from the opposite direction, from the Val di Landro valley32
We are going in this direction ...33
Larches are already yellowing, but the temperatures are not quite suitable for October34
The entire valley is thickly covered. Unbelievable ...35
The hut is open, so we make a stop. Service is quick, prices normal.36
We return back by road, as the parallel path 105 is buried in several places.37
GPS track of the hiked path. It recorded 17 km and 1400 m elevation gain.38
