Croda Rossa di Sesto

We scheduled the tour for Sunday since the forecast indicated improvement from the west. And indeed, the early morning view from Sappada to Cretone and surroundings promised a nice day. Since the cable car from Moos to the pastures under Croda Rossa starts only at 8.30 (return ticket 13.2 eur), we looked around for starting points for other tours planned around there. Well, path no. 100 which we started at the upper station is so trodden that it needs no markers, ascends gradually and is certainly heavily crowded at busier times. With views dominated by vertical lines you don't even notice how quickly time passes and only the harder section secured with cable on slabs doesn't allow constant looking around. Everywhere you see remains of WWI warfare and right to the top which is also full of holes. Given that the mountain is higher than Triglav the new snow patches in the last cirque don't surprise at all, but they pose no obstacle; rather an advantage for crossing the annoying scree. We reach the summit with obligatory cross at the cable over the last rock steps. View despite clear sight to Glockner, Zillertal Alps and Carnic Alps still mostly hangs on the Three Cime, Dreischusterspitze, Elfer and other peaks around there. Strada degli alpini - last part to Passo della Sentinella is still quite snowy and with binoculars I clearly see someone cautiously pushing through there. Yeah time up there really flies. Return to cable car nothing particularly demanding; short stop at Rudi Hütte and already long drive home awaits us.

mirank, this peak tempts me for some time, although probably missed for this year - can you tell which path to the cable car, the one you say is nothing particularly demanding, did you descend? A.Mašera describes the tour in his book, did you follow that description? What photos?
regards

Interesting is also the circular tour to Croda Rossa or Rotwand. By cable car from Moos to the pastures, path no. 100 to the remains of military objects at Wurzbach saddle (cca 2600m) and then after a few minutes at the junction instead upwards (from here to the top another hour) down the scree towards Sentinella pass (between Croda Rossa and Elfer). Mid-August there was still a small snow patch in the gully, passable this year in boots. In the approach to the saddle, below the second snow patch, starts a medium difficult ferrata to the junction with the Alpini Path, which descends to Sentinella saddle. About 100 height meters below the saddle on the left we spot the start of ferrata Zandonella, which is quite steep but has enough holds and steps. Well, here and there it's easiest to pull up. It leads first to a ledge with military remains and then stands upright again, because it ends practically at the top. About the views to Elfer, Popero, Cima Bagni, Comelico valley, Karnic Alps, Julian Alps etc. I won't, those from the other side (Croda dei Toni, Tre Cime & Co., Punta Tre Scarperi/Dreischusterspitze, Hohe Tauern etc.) @mirank has already described. Return via this easier, secured in places path (cable, ladders, scree). This variant extends the tour from Mašera's guide by 4 hours. We overnighted at the hut at the top cable car station, started after breakfast (7.30), and comfortably drank a beer before the last cable car ride, which in August is at 17.30. Recommend.

Tilka, exactly as you say we used the descent path described by Mašera which branches off to the right from the access path below the Wurzbach plain into the avalanche gully just above the slabs. Connection to trail 15b is short and in my opinion sufficiently secured. Since we left the via ferrata set in the car, on the top after talking to a local we abandoned the idea of descent to Passo della Sentinella and return via part of Strada degli Alpini. It will wait for another opportunity to do it fully with full gear. If no major weather worsening, there's still time for dry tours also in this area, boldly and safely to all.

Thanks to both for the reply - with the beautiful pictures I'm drooling even more! Next year it won't escape me, plus some "little one" nearby.

Last Thursday we were at the top. Gondola starts at 8am until 17:30. Return ticket costs 15.80€. Path without features, snow only at two spots but passable. Lower part of the secured path newly equipped-new cable and pegs.
Alpini Path-Strada degli Alpini was still quite snowy but passable. On return from top we met two from Ribnica who came via Alpini Path and said Italians equipped and secured it over snowfields so passable without problem. Since weather on descent "cleared up" we weren't in hurry and didn't descend through the gully to join path 15b. Descent through gully is much faster, because hikers who were behind us on top were ahead of us at the pasture.

It would be a shame in such beautiful morning to wait for gondola (return 17.30€) so we went on foot to the upper pastures of Croda Rossa, then continued on path 100, which is nicely described in previous posts.

Last part of descent we did on path 15b, don't even know if we gained anything, but it's nice.

At the "top" there's a notice that ferrata Zandonella is closed.

With just slight dew we walked up to the start at Rudi's hut, where the sun already shines on us. Due to early hour we met no one on ascent. Path completely dry and no changes compared to previous reports. Shelter in the cavern right below the cross notch still in same condition as last year.
Knap, this one still from the east side1

Yesterday was the right day to repeat the tour; we started late-Italian style. The novelty is that those slabs at the start have been replaced with pegs along the cable. No other changes on the path. We descended past Casteliere to path 15B and beer at Rudi Hütte. The rest is seen from picturesnasmeh
