Degenhorn, a peak that was a complete stranger to me just a week ago, got added to the list of mountains on Saturday that can't be forgotten, and the letters of its name will shine in that list like the rocks that sparkled in the sun like scattered grains of gold as we left it. The trail started fascinating me already at pl. Volkzeinealm (cca 1800m, our starting point where you look around at so many little streams whose waters rush down the green slopes above it). As you climb to the upper levels toward your goal, you admire many others carving their path to the valley or breaking like waterfalls over the rocks, taking your breath away. Through the pastures, curious looks from colorful sheep watch you; in the distance we spotted horses grazing too. The path also goes around several high alpine lakes; especially the Degenhornsee lake captivates you, greeting you at cca 2700 m; it draws you with its appearance and you can't help admiring it all the way to the summit, like a pearl in this high alpine setting. At the summit you're spinning around because everything is new, all different, unknown. Slowly you take in the names of the peaks on display before you; we managed it somehow with collective effort, helped by a local and the map. This Degenhorn belongs to the Villgratenberge group, which are one of the groups of the Hohe Tauern. It has a smaller brother (Kleines Degenhorn, 2849 m), over which we descended on the way back. Yeah, we had to return too; we did it via Ziljska dolina and drove back via Dravska, so cca 3 hours drive each way. A trip that fascinates you all along the path, the views enchant you, definitely way above expectations from the rarer photos available.
