Here's a link for apartments and hotels http://www.valledifassa.it/ prices are very different depending on the place. Italians have tourism well organized with a card for the cable car you can also go up by bus so no need to go up and down the same path. I've been to Canazei and Predazzo three times so far.

In the Dolomites I recommend e.g. Tre Cime di Lavaredo. Yes, it's crowded and popular but if you go from the Venetian side by road. Less so if you go from South Tyrol direction (Sexten), on footpath. Dolomites are well described e.g. in Walking in Italy by Lonely Planet.
