Dolomites d'Ampezzo - Astaldi via ferrata

This time we tackled the high-altitude promenade under the Tofanas, and the Astaldi via ferrata stuck in my memory the most on the whole route. It only earned the official ferrata name because of the safety cables; in reality it's a crossing in an incredible setting, nothing like the usual Dolomites image. It's also one of the oldest equipped paths near Cortina, running through lagoon sediments from over 200 million years ago. Numerous layers stand out, mostly red. Whoever takes on this path will definitely be surprised nasmeh.

Besides Astaldi ferrata, Ra Pegna and Ra Bujela ferratas on rock spurs between Pomedes and Duca d'Aosta huts were new for us. I warn especially about Ra Bujela ferrata. It's C difficulty with some longer vertical sections. It has an entry and descent part, but the descent isn't marked. Correct start is in the valley from the direction of Duca d'Aosta hut, descent towards Pomedes hut. We found out the hard way velik nasmeh.

Altogether we did a beautiful scenic loop. More about the whole route in photo story ...
Dolomites d'Ampezzo - Astaldi via ferrata We parked near the military museum just below Valparola pass. Many spent the night here.1
Dolomites d'Ampezzo - Astaldi via ferrata At the edge of the road we look for the junction to the Sentiero Kaiserjäger path.2
Dolomites d'Ampezzo - Astaldi via ferrata This path runs through numerous defensive trenches, as this was the first battle line.3
Dolomites d'Ampezzo - Astaldi via ferrata View down to Falzarego pass, starting point for many great tours :)4
Dolomites d'Ampezzo - Astaldi via ferrata Assistance on the ascent through the scree gully.5
Dolomites d'Ampezzo - Astaldi via ferrata This assistance is even much more important :)6
Dolomites d'Ampezzo - Astaldi via ferrata The fridge doesn't help much. The air is full of humidity and stuffy.7
Dolomites d'Ampezzo - Astaldi via ferrata The path gets more worn out every year. It's time for renovation.8
Dolomites d'Ampezzo - Astaldi via ferrata Even the secured passages require more caution due to loose steel cables.9
Dolomites d'Ampezzo - Astaldi via ferrata Time has taken its toll on the summit sign for the Kaiserjäger route. The one in the opposite direction has suffered even more.10
Dolomites d'Ampezzo - Astaldi via ferrata At the top of Lagazuoi Piccolo. No crowds because the gondola isn't operating yet.11
Dolomites d'Ampezzo - Astaldi via ferrata Descent towards the hut. The metal platform is also intended for wheelchair users.12
Dolomites d'Ampezzo - Astaldi via ferrata Rif. Lagazuoi hut is as touristy as it gets. But in the morning it still gives a homely impression.13
Dolomites d'Ampezzo - Astaldi via ferrata Upper station of the cable car just before start-up.14
Dolomites d'Ampezzo - Astaldi via ferrata A peculiarity of these places: white signs with red inscriptions. They are found nowhere else.15
Dolomites d'Ampezzo - Astaldi via ferrata Fanesi during the descent to Lagazuoi pass.16
Dolomites d'Ampezzo - Astaldi via ferrata First follow path 401, then 402.17
Dolomites d'Ampezzo - Astaldi via ferrata In between, a nice view opens to the recently visited Travenanzes valley.18
Dolomites d'Ampezzo - Astaldi via ferrata Our direction ... still 402.19
Dolomites d'Ampezzo - Astaldi via ferrata Numerous war remnants are visible everywhere.20
Dolomites d'Ampezzo - Astaldi via ferrata We switch to path 404 and walk under Tofano to the junction for Rif. Guissani hut.21
Dolomites d'Ampezzo - Astaldi via ferrata View back on Tofano di Rozes. We also looked for the cave beneath it, but didn't find it this time.22
Dolomites d'Ampezzo - Astaldi via ferrata This is a story in itself. An incredible passage over remnants of a former sea.23
Dolomites d'Ampezzo - Astaldi via ferrata Ferata Astaldi transports you into a different environment that doesn't quite fit usual ideas of the Dolomites.24
Dolomites d'Ampezzo - Astaldi via ferrata This entire area consists of lagoon formations estimated at 220 million years old.25
Dolomites d'Ampezzo - Astaldi via ferrata The ferrata is quite straightforward, but without the safety features there wouldn't be many visitors.26
Dolomites d'Ampezzo - Astaldi via ferrata View back ...27
Dolomites d'Ampezzo - Astaldi via ferrata And the view ahead. The photo hardly conveys the actual impression on site.28
Dolomites d'Ampezzo - Astaldi via ferrata Steel cables are almost everywhere. The ledges are wide but quite exposed.29
Dolomites d'Ampezzo - Astaldi via ferrata However, there are still some exposed sections without protection.30
Dolomites d'Ampezzo - Astaldi via ferrata The path also requires some humility :)31
Dolomites d'Ampezzo - Astaldi via ferrata A little more and the Astaldi via ferrata will end.32
Dolomites d'Ampezzo - Astaldi via ferrata We continue right in the direction of Rif. Pomedes hut.33
Dolomites d'Ampezzo - Astaldi via ferrata View of the traversed path34
Dolomites d'Ampezzo - Astaldi via ferrata In the hut we take our first break of the day. Followed by continuation towards Rif. Duca d'Aosta hut.35
Dolomites d'Ampezzo - Astaldi via ferrata In between there is still something interesting for us :). First the rocky spur with Ra Pegna via ferrata.36
Dolomites d'Ampezzo - Astaldi via ferrata This is an example of a school via ferrata. Short, well protected, difficulty at most B.37
Dolomites d'Ampezzo - Astaldi via ferrata Steel cables are everywhere, at important and unimportant places.38
Dolomites d'Ampezzo - Astaldi via ferrata Accordingly, Ra Pegna is also visited. Most visitors arrive by cable car.39
Dolomites d'Ampezzo - Astaldi via ferrata The summit is also wide and spacious.40
Dolomites d'Ampezzo - Astaldi via ferrata View of Tofano di Mezzo and the Rif. Pomedes hut below it.41
Dolomites d'Ampezzo - Astaldi via ferrata This is already another story, the Ra Bujela via ferrata on the adjacent spur.42
Dolomites d'Ampezzo - Astaldi via ferrata We head directly to it from Ra Pegna and quickly reach the pointed summit.43
Dolomites d'Ampezzo - Astaldi via ferrata Follows the descent along the ridge to the valley not knowing what awaits us :)44
Dolomites d'Ampezzo - Astaldi via ferrata The via ferrata becomes unusually steep and the continuation promises the same.45
Dolomites d'Ampezzo - Astaldi via ferrata The strangest thing is that we are climbing in the opposite direction to everyone else :)46
Dolomites d'Ampezzo - Astaldi via ferrata We have no special problems when meeting others, we safely bypass everything.47
Dolomites d'Ampezzo - Astaldi via ferrata Hmm, this is getting steeper and steeper, but the steepest part is yet to come :)48
Dolomites d'Ampezzo - Astaldi via ferrata But it is true that there are no direction signs for the via ferrata anywhere :)49
Dolomites d'Ampezzo - Astaldi via ferrata It is not to be underestimated. I give it a solid C difficulty rating.50
Dolomites d'Ampezzo - Astaldi via ferrata This is roughly how the entry wall looks, descent wall for us.51
Dolomites d'Ampezzo - Astaldi via ferrata View from a distance. Right the pointed Ra Bujela, left the gentle Ra Pegna.52
Dolomites d'Ampezzo - Astaldi via ferrata We continue past the Rif. Duca d'Aosta hut.53
Dolomites d'Ampezzo - Astaldi via ferrata Very interesting tree fungus of unknown name. It measures a good half meter in height and width.54
Dolomites d'Ampezzo - Astaldi via ferrata Rif. Dibona hut, where we stop again. Cappuccino = 2€, beer 0.5L = 6€.55
Dolomites d'Ampezzo - Astaldi via ferrata The road to here is in normal condition. Some potholes, but slowly you get there :)56
Dolomites d'Ampezzo - Astaldi via ferrata Back to the starting point along the lower path marked 412.57
Dolomites d'Ampezzo - Astaldi via ferrata There are plenty of signposts everywhere and you can't get too lost.58
Dolomites d'Ampezzo - Astaldi via ferrata Military roots …59
Dolomites d'Ampezzo - Astaldi via ferrata The year at the tunnel entrance.60
Dolomites d'Ampezzo - Astaldi via ferrata Cinque Torri on the opposite side of the valley …61
Dolomites d'Ampezzo - Astaldi via ferrata We are already at Falzarego, now we just need to find the path to Valparola pass.62
Dolomites d'Ampezzo - Astaldi via ferrata That's it, path 423. To the starting point it completely avoids the road between the two passes.63
Dolomites d'Ampezzo - Astaldi via ferrata Panoramic path beneath the Dolomite giants. 23 km and 1500 m of ascent accumulated.64
